I told my daughter when she went for a summer intern position this past summer to remember two things: (1) work hard at whatever they give you to do; (2) be cheerful and never complain.

They loved her! Apparently this kind of work ethic is not as common as it used to be.

Sound advice. She will likely always have a job. Good job Mom!

She is very lucky to have a Mom like you.

Children learn their work ethic from their parents.

“Apparently this kind of work ethic is not as common as it used to be.”

If you attended/graduated college, it’s been awhile.

The sense of entitlement for a lot of college kids these days
is simply jaw-dropping.

My Professor sister-in-law runs into it all the time.

You gave your daughter the golden advice. As a retired govt. manager, a person with that work ethic is highly valued.

The worker still needs to be smart and good at his or her job, but the work ethic and the ability to stay out of the vicious gossip circles is critically missing in so many workers.

I have advised all three of my children about this for years. I believe they have taken my advice and appear to be accepted in places where they have worked.

There are many lessons to be learned over the years to be successful, but you have given your daughter the one she needed as an interm.

You must be a good mom.

My advice to my son when he was 16 and first looking for a job. Walk into every single establishment that you apply for, dressed ready for the interview!

You never know if someplace is desperate for an employee that can start right away, but if you walk in dressed in shabby jeans, a T Shirt, and flip flops, you will not be considered for that job.

Also treat every single employee that you meet during that first encounter with sincerity and respect. They probably will be asked by the boss for their first impressions. First impressions are the KEY to any eventual employment.

You hit the nail on the head! As much as I don’t like the education establishment, it is parents who must shoulder much of the blame for raising lazy kids. It is amazing how many teens don’t have to do any kind of work - not even around the house, let alone get a part-time job for pay.

We keep delaying the age when anyone is expected to assume any kind of responsibility for themselves, and then wonder why nobody ever grows up and acts like an adult. Kids should be doing some kind of work (chores) as soon as they are able to pick up their own toys, and it should progress from there.

I, too, worry about the future with so many people expecting someone else to take care of them and give them whatever they desire.
