.Ships engine wont meet Calif. standards
Unless the Lady Washington reduces its carbon footprint, Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority members fear they will not be able to sail the ship to California, due to the states strict air pollution regulations.
The Seaport announced this week it is beginning a sailing green capital campaign to raise $100,000 to purchase a new, more fuel efficient engine as well as make upgrades to the ships electrical system, Seaport communications director Joe Follansbee said.
The Ladys current engine, a 1950s-era Detroit Diesel 8V-71 no longer meets environmental standards, Follansbee said. The Seaport says if it does sail the Lady to California in the future, there is a risk of citations and/or fines, Follansbee said.
The Lady Washington is an ambassador to the West Coast, Follansbee said. We want to make sure we are in compliance wherever we go.
Though the Lady was built new in conjunction with Washington states centennial celebration in 1989, the current engine was salvaged from a fishing vessel and rebuilt, Follansbee said. Seaport officials dont have an exact date of when the original engine was built, but are certain it is more than 20 years old, Follansbee said.
The Hawaiian Chieftain, the Ladys sailing partner, will not be getting its engine replaced because it is still up to environmental standards, Follansbee said.
The $100,000 estimate comes from several components. About $60,000 is needed to replace the engine itself, $15,000 is needed to replace the transmission and $25,000 is needed for mechanical and electrical upgrades to ensure all the ship systems work together, Follansbee said.
Seaport officials have not yet selected the make and model of the engine that will replace the current engine, but are working with several manufacturers to explore the possibility of using a discount or charitable donation, Follansbee said. Seaport officials are also exploring engine models that can run on bio-diesel as well as regular diesel fuel.
We cant guarantee wed be burning it, but wed like to have the capability, Follansbee said.
Seaport officials say the engine it does select will reduce fuel consumption, and meet and/or exceed the federal Environmental Protection Agencys Tier II exhaust emissions standards, California marine engine exhaust standards as well as standards established by the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution From Ships, Follansbee said. Seaport officials say the new engine it selects should last at least 20 years.
Seaport officials hope to raise the money by Dec. 31.
Frickin MORONS DUMBSH*TS
What was the Carbon footprint of the Station fire?
Spoken like a pirate, Pissy!
I have an idea or two. Either don't sail to California, or don't use the engine in state waters. Nobody had engines 200 years ago, but they managed well enough.
Say WA? Evergreen State ping Wow, must be encouraging to all to see that going green will not only save the planet, but be inexpensive as well.
I mean, only going green would make someone dismantle a perfectly good and operating machine, spend a hundred thousand dollars to make it merely be able to run once more, but achieve only a slightly higher arbitrary pollution standard, and think they are actually doing something that will save the planet and ‘make a difference’. Please.
She appeared in one of the Star Trek movies.
I agree. Sad — I have a friend who used to be part of the crew.
Maybe they can appeal to O’Bozo for a “Cash for Clunker Ship” bailout...
This should be shouted across the country and used to embarrass the state of California. They’ve banned a sailing ship from their waters because of its ill-defined “carbon footprint”. Only morons would do that. We need to shame them with it.
They should SUE the state of commiefornia. When the government makes your private property worthless you are entitled to compensation.
Someone should ask how much the State is fining itself daily for their own pollution release in fires every summer. If they don't apply the law to every infraction, they can't lawfully apply it to anyone. Equal protection and all...
I think that there are laws limiting the ability to sue the mentally defective...
A Detriot 8V-71 will run just fine on biodiesel. I don’t see what the problem is, unless of course the engine is in need of replacement or rebuild anyway. I know someone who runs B100 biodiesel in his fishing boat’s ancient Lehman Ford diesel engine with no problem.
replace with slave galley from movie ben hur.
Yes but only union members can man her.
My thoughts exactly :-)
100k for a new engine or pay a fine? how much is the fine?
