There is sme sort of estimate the park service can do from the aerial shots. I think that if the crowd between the Washington Monument and the Capitol spills in to the side streets that it tends to be something like 750,000. this looks like a whole lot more than this.

Birds-eye view always looks more densly packed than it really is because you cannot see the large patches of grass between people.
