Eight years later, danger still lurks

Evidence abounds that America and much of the West have moved on from that awful moment eight years ago this morning. It is far more doubtful the perpetrators of that hideous act of mass murder have done the same.

Much of the West is back to somnolence and self-interested conduct where international terrorism is concerned. Last month, Britain and Scotland released Libyan mass murderer Abdel Basset Mohamed al-Megrahi on grounds of "compassion," in the process committing a vicious act of cruelty against the family members of those he killed in the terror bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988. al-Megrahi reportedly suffers from terminal cancer, though Libyan sources say his condition is "stable and good." British news reports suggest al-Megrahi may have been released as part of a business transaction involving Libyan oil.

It's no different in the United States, where political imperatives continue to trump the national interest. Viewing itself ascendant with the election of President Obama and strong Democratic majorities in Congress, the far left has abandoned the anti-war movement even as the new president prepares to dispatch fresh troops to Afghanistan. Plainly, the real target of protesters who once haunted the Litchfield Green and countless other sites was not the war, but Republican George W. Bush.

The corruption of what should be a serious policy debate further has been perpetrated by the news media. In the years after 9/11, the Bush administration twice begged The New York Times to withhold leaked information detailing U.S. surveillance tactics. The Times sabotaged the programs by publishing stories about them. But when its reporters were kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanis-tan, mum was the word. Again, self-interest trumped the national interest.

Finally, if al-Qaida had moles in the U.S. Department of Justice, they would be pushing for the prosecution of CIA agents who used rough interrogation methods against known terrorists such as 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. They also would advocate the release of photos showing Mohammed and others being subjected to waterboarding, the better to inflame the Muslim world against America. But there is no need for al-Qaida moles. Attorney General Eric Holder and company are doing their work for them, gratis.

Meanwhile, during a week when Americans, their government and their media should be focused on anti-terrorism policy and assessing the magnitude of the peril, President Obama on Wednesday night gave a speech intended to turn everyone's attention to ... health insurance.

The Islamist enemy is nothing if not patient; he is willing to wait as long as necessary to acquire the means to destroy America and the West. America still honors the heroes and the victims of 9/11; the nation has not lost its resolve to carry on the fight. But there are disturbing signs the new leadership in Washington, D.C., has no such resolve, or even a basic understanding of the true nature of the threat.

Sad to say, but it’s going to take at least one more 9/11-scale attack to wake up the American sheeple. And the jihadists are sufficiently evil and sufficiently stupid that they will do it.

Seemingly any more than the Clinton misAdministration.
