It's bad enough that liberalized divorce laws and shifting cultural mores have undermined the institution of marriage, created the plague of single-parent families and all their attendant social problems, and eroded personal responsibility and commitment.
Now Brazil is about to put couples one mouse click away from splitsville. Pending final legislative approval and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's signature, Brazilians will be allowed to file and resolve consensual divorces on the Internet, sparing them the bother of marriage counseling and court appearances, as well as the possibility of reconciliation.
Also on its way out is the rule that couples must be separated for at least a year before a divorce can be granted. If couples have a fight at breakfast, they can be divorced by lunch.
Whether Web divorces catch on in this country remains to be seen, but for the sake of generations to come, societies should be striving to find ways to strengthen marriages, not create new, quick-and-easy escape hatches.
Ping to a Republican-American Editorial.
If you want on or off this list, let me know.
Didn’t the President of Brazil come out a year or so ago saying that you had to be nuts to oppose homosexuality?
Thanks for the ping Graybeard to the article about the Leftists trivializing marriage in Brazil. At least that’s how I read it.
Truly the answer to strengthening marriage is weakening Liberalism, and the influence of Liberalism upon Societies.
