Ram reform through now - pay for it later (Scarlet O'Hara Syndrome)

The head of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission says he doesn't believe President Barack Obama will ram healthcare reform through Congress if it means losing control of the House and Senate.

As President Obama makes what many believe is a final push for a healthcare reform bill, conservatives say the outrage over the proposal could spell trouble for Democrats during next year's elections. Dr. Richard Land, president of the ERLC, says the president has a lot at stake over the healthcare reform package.

"If he's willing to possibly be a one-term president and try to ram this through against the wishes of the American people, they might get it through," Land acknowledges. "But even then, I'm not sure the Congress is going to go off that cliff with him."

ObamaCare 3And why would members of Congress hesitate to support the president on healthcare reform?

"I believe that if they were to ram this through -- just to do it against the wishes of the American people and to do it on just pure, raw political power -- I believe they could lose control of the House of Representatives in next year's elections," Land contends. "And I don't think that there are a lot of congressmen who are ready to lose their seats over this."
