Former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card will address members of the state GOP at a committee meeting tonight in Newton, potentially signaling his intention to run for the Senate seat vacated by the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Herald has learned.

Card, 62, a Holbrook native, will attend the meeting at the Newton Marriott, according to a Republican source with knowledge of the logistics. Card’s appearance follows an announcement by GOP gubernatorial hopeful Christy Mihos this morning that he will not quit his quest to unseat Gov. Deval Patrick and make a bid for the Senate. Mihos was approached by a member of the Republican National Committee about running, according to his campaign.

Nothing against Andy Card, but, dude, just clear the deck for Curt to run. This seat is being gift wrapped for the Rats.

God Bless anyone who would dare run as a Republican in Massachusetts.

Curt Schilling can’t run as a Republican and seems to be dithering on running as an Independent.

And I wish the GOP could find someone half way credible to run against Barney Fwank.

I see your point, but Card’s been in both Bush administrations, and that kills him, even though he’s qualified. 0% chance to win in MA.

Card might have a better chance running against Deval Patrick than trying to take Kennedy’s seat.

Would love to see Jack Welch, former CEO of GE, running for the seat. He wouldn’t have much trouble raising money for a huge advertising campaign!

Newton is my birthplace.

I like Andy Card. I only hope he will be introducing Curt Shilling as a Senate candidate. :-)

ha good luck with that - NOTHING is going to remove that buffoon. A golden rule of politics is never get caught with a dead woman or in bed with a young man. MA kept electing two who broke these rules. Frank’s live in boyfriend ran a male prostitution ring from Franks congressional apartment for crying out loud and he still got reelected.

He is a registered Independent, and can’t run as a Republican because he had to be a Republican for 90 days before filing his nomination papers.

MA law dictates a candidate must be a memeber of “x” party 90 days before the primary. We’re less than 90 days, and Curt’s registered as an IND. He can’t switch to GOP now, would have to run as IND.

I basically agree with you. But I have a feeling we’re going to see a LOT of incumbents ousted in next year’s midterm elections. I’ve seen stranger things happen in politics. In MA the Gov. Patrick is as unpopular as the governor of NY. There is MUCH discontentment out there even in the blue states. An intelligent, articulate candidate could actually give Fwank a run for his money. I would at least like to see a challenge which would force Fwank to remain in his district and not dole out money to other candidates.
