Democrats may be moving toward a trigger proposal that could implement the public health insurance option several years from now, but dont expect Republicans to latch on to this idea as some form of compromise.
I think a lot of Republicans would be very leery of a trigger, because a bad idea today would be a bad idea tomorrow, House GOP Conference Chairman Mike Pence told reporters today.
Democrats have floated the idea of a trigger that would impose benchmarks on insurance complanies to put in place certain reforms over a period of time with the idea that that a public option would go into effect if private industry doesnt cover enough of the uninsured.
The offensive is eyed toward bringing in Sen. Olympia Snowe a key moderate vote in the Senate Finance Committee Gang of Six that has been negotiating health care reform for months.
But House Republicans, at least, say the idea is a no go.
Id have to look at that very, very carefully, because I think thats just a way of getting a public option, just maybe a bit more slowly, said Michigan Rep. Dave Camp, the lead Republican on the powerful Ways and Means Committee.
Camp left open the possibility, however, that Republicans would compromise with Democrats on a reform bill if the public option was dropped from the bill.
Pence and Camp said their conversations with voters over the August break confirmed his view that the public didnt want what he called a government takeover of health care.
But they pushed back against criticism leveled against at them from Democrats that they had yet to offer any real ideas for reforming the nations health care industry.
I think to say that Republicans have no plan is just plain wrong, said Camp, listing off ideas that the party had put forward but had been rejected.
Pence, meanwhile, was quick to thumb his nose at Obamas planned speech.
The American people dont want another health care speech, they want another heath care plan, he said.
A ‘trigger’ is but another smoke and mirrors attempt at public option......a no go!
Possible Republican Testical Detection.
Recalibrate, check for equipment malfunction.
Do not trust.
Call for backup.
But if the Dems do pass one on their own that has a trigger, it will at least get us 14 months down the road to vote the Dems out of power so the whole thing can be short circuited before too much damage is done.

i bet theres a lot of folks that wished some of these idiot politicians were stuffed too
If the GOP had any brains at all - a very big IF - here’s what they’d do: take a stand. Every single one of them announces they will not support this effort to nationalize halth care. Tell the country and the demholes “if you demholes want to do this, go ahead, we are unable to stop you.” and the party needs to expel any alleged Republican that will support or cooperate in this impending disaster. Snowe, Collins, McCain, all of ‘em out. Go have lunch with Specter and Jeffords. But the Republicans should insist, no demand, that if this is the crisis Obama and his henchmen insist it is, demand it be put into effect immediately, not after the 2012 elections. then you’ll see the demholes scatter like the cockroaches they are.
Okay, who sent the neuticles?
The language will be so stacked against the insurance companies that you can guarantee it will get “triggered.” If the Repubs unite and stand opposed, they win big in ‘10 and ‘12. If Snowe bolts, kick her out.
Dimocrats have never explained WHY the ‘public option’ is needed.
FORGET IT ,NO TRIGGER UNLESS ROY ROGERS IS RIDING
Any Republican that votes for any type of public option is just as much a Marxist as the democrats. If it weren't for the Marxists in Washington , we wouldn't be government slaves today. We'd still be a free people.
For Congress.
