McCain addresses civic leaders [calls for "bipartisan" overhaul of Medicare] [attacks TARP]

McCain also spoke about the raft of national spending bills over the past year, including the $787 billion financial bailout of 2008, $700 billion for the stimulus plan and the $83 billion rescue of the auto industry.

Taken with other measures, the spending would saddle the country with as much as $9 trillion of debt future generations would have to pay, the senator said.

"What I'm wary about is that we're committing an act of generational theft," McCain said.

He advocated for reforms of Medicare, saying the system likely would go broke within seven years if Congress and the president don't act to bring about reforms.

"Of course we're not going to let Medicare go broke," McCain said.

The senator called for a bipartisan effort to reform the system, recalling the 1983 reforms to Social Security. Those reforms, McCain said, were made possible by Republican President Ronald Reagan and Democratic Speaker of the House Tip O'Neil, who crossed party lines to keep Social Security from insolvency.

"I believe Americans want us to act in a bipartisan effort," McCain said. "That's what I think we need to do."

He’s got to go. He’s no leader and no one trusts him anymore. If he let Obama get into office w/o checking his natural born status while shouting down everyone who questioned it, he needs to go to prison with Obama.

My theory is that he’s telling Schilling to run in MA because he doesn’t want Schilling to run against him in AZ.

You are so right. All a thinking person needs to do is read is book- he tells you he has no willingness to follow rules or to be loyal to anyone. Period.

McCain didn’t just vote for TARP. He led the strong arm sessions to get it passed.

Frankly, the feckless and rather stupid McCain doesn’t give a damn about Arizona voters. He knows that they are mainly conservative in outlook, and despite his voting record as long as he runs with an (R) behind his name he will win. He is funded by big money in Scottsdale and Sedona, and he has the backing of Washington’s Republican dinosaurs. In Southern Arizona he is hated by ranchers and others who oppose his stand on immigration — a stance meant to benefit the big farms in Yuma and the region around Phoenix, and the posh hotels. John has never forgotten his friends. Big money got him elected, and it keeps him in power. What is truly worrisome is that he will somehow manage to hold on and then get his daughter elected to the Senate. She is a joke, but then so is the Senate.

Well....I’d say the voters of AZ deserve all they get if they reelect him. The big $$$ excuse is just that, an excuse and lame. I always had the idea the people of AZ weren’t a bunch of sheep.. Guess I was wrong...hope not though.
