To Cry of 'Nobama,' Morristown Tea Party Urges Government Restraint

Labor Day barbecues took a back seat today to a political "tea party" in Morristown that drew about 2,000 people who waved flags, hoisted placards and donned red-white-and-blue outfits to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the federal government.

The crowd packed the Morristown green to listen and cheer as President Obama, his proposed health-care reform, a "cap-and-trade" bill to reduce greenhouse gases, bailouts and stimulus packages all came under withering criticism from speakers.

"What we're seeing in this country -- and it didn't begin with this election or the last election -- what we're seeing is a slow march from the liberty of our founding fathers to socialism that began in the 1940s," said Richard Luzzi of the nonprofit Morristown Tea Party organization that held the event. "This is to show we're not going to take it anymore."

It was the third and largest tea party held in the Morristown square in the past five months. The first on April 15 coincided with tax day and was followed by another tea party on July 4. Those similarly drew sizable crowds and were among hundreds of tea parties held on those days throughout the nation.

Labor Day saw fewer tea parties across the Garden State, making the Morristown gathering a somewhat central event. Activists registered voters and signed up people for mailing lists and to attend a tea party 'unity rally' on Saturday in Washington, D.C.
