UK: Passengers face new tax to halt rise in air travel
The Times ^ | 9/9/2009 | Ben Webster

Tens of billions of pounds will have to be raised through flight taxes to compensate developing countries for the damage air travel does to the environment, according to the Government’s advisory body on climate change.

Ticket prices should rise steadily over time to deter air travel and ensure that carbon dioxide emissions from aviation fall back to 2005 levels, the Committee on Climate Change says. It believes that airlines should be forced to share the burden of meeting Britain’s commitment to an 80 per cent cut in emissions by 2050.

The Times has learnt that it may challenge the Government’s decision to approve a third runway at Heathrow, suggesting that this would be inconsistent with that commitment.

The committee was established under last year’s Climate Change Act. It has a strong influence on government policy and proposed the 80 per cent target accepted by ministers.

It says that initially the cost per passenger of compensating for climate change would be small but would rise over time and eventually reach a level that would put people off flying.

Industry estimates suggest that the average passenger would pay less than £10 extra per return ticket when aviation joins the EU emissions trading scheme in 2012. This would depend on the price of allowances to emit CO2, which is expected to rise over time.

The committee proposes a global cap on aviation emissions, with airlines required to buy allowances, and that the revenue generated should be given to developing countries to help them to adapt to climate change — for example, by building flood defences to cope with rising sea levels.

In a letter to the Government published today, the committee says that an increase in global temperatures is inevitable and that developed countries must pay for the consequences

That tax not to fly will be a subsidy to the airline industry to keep them from going out of business.

What if it turns out we have global cooling and we WANT more carbon dioxide? Will passengers get rebates?

Buy one carbon footprint, get another half off, maybe? I still have this nagging feeling that the public is just letting these idiots hang themselves, so that they can throw out the whole basket in one fell swoop.

What has happened to Britain is simply this: The popularity of Tony Blair (along with scandals with the Conservatives) gave Labour a continuous, undisputed 16-year reign. Left in charge of a country, any country, that long, leftists will utterly ruin it.

"to compensate developing countries for the damage air travel does to the environment,. . ."

And this international pollution obligation is where?

The countries that worship tribalism in the 21st century are issuing pollution licenses to civilized nations?

I can see where China needs to be compensated by the British flying public.

So in other words!!! SCREW YOU THIRD WORLD. We won’t be giving you any more of our tourist pounds or allowing our wealthy British citizens to visit your developing countries because we want to protect you from the climate change boogeyman!!! FANTASTIC. The one law liberals violate every single time is the law of unintended consequences. Phuket Thailand is crawing with British tourists. But Phuket (and wherever British citizens holiday), you’re on your own. The elitist smug environmentalists have decided you need to wallow in your third world misery more than you need to imporve your lifestyle with British tourist pounds.

This idea is stupid beyond belief.

I would imagine that the UK is small enough that simply flying out of Ireland, France, or any number of nearby countries to escape the tax would be a realistic possibility.

This is what happens when Socialism's no longer have large healthy Capitalism's to feed off of, (USA) there by giving the illusion that Socialism works all by itself and that Capitalism is the evil force that creates difficulty for making Socialism pure.

Well, most of them do work for a while, (A few short years) until corruption and the vast debt they accumulate finally brings them down into a pile of steaming dung.

Uh, excuse me, but how are people supposed to get from one place to another?
No more travel outside the contiguous landmass?

How will the mail be delivered?
What about cargo?
Are they all going to regress to a neolithic form of existence?

"Uh, excuse me, but how are people supposed to get from one place to another?"

Commies don't like people moving around too much. They will control travel to cities.

Papers, please!!

Damage done to the environment?

Get real! What about airlifts for food, safety and shelter in human crisis?

What about the economic benefits from being able to travel to destinations where money will be spent?

If money is spent in a destination, does it help to raise the economic welfare of the citizens, who will be beneficiaries of money spent in their little Disney Land or Museum?

Hey, How about this: Less travel to your country means less money. If fewer dollars are exacted to purchase your boardwalk trinkets, who is the beneficiary?

Oh that picture makes me want to go and see how other people live and make a small donation. However, the new “Flight Tax” makes it unaffordable.

Funny, “Flight Tax” = money in flight from your country. You are so smart. /s
