NY Times Magazine honors Israeli dog mess DNA bank initiative

A Petah Tikva municipal initiative designed to combat public dog defecation by collecting DNA samples from the city's canines has earned recognition from The New York Times Magazine as one of the most noteworthy ideas of 2008.

Launched three years ago, the program was the brainchild of Petah Tikva Mayor Yitzhak Ochayon. Its implementation and success in recent months has attracted significant international attention to the project.

"I have had enough of this horrible phenomenon of dog poop littering all the streets of the city," Ochayon said. "It drove me crazy even though I assigned five inspectors with motorcycles to the problem and every day they chased after dog owners. We did not manage to minimize this awful situation." "So I came up with the idea of using DNA tests for dogs. I spoke with the city's top veterinarian, Dr. Tika Bar-On, and she began inquiring as to how it would be possible to implement the idea and for all practical purposes she is the brains behind the project."

"[The mayor] asked me to check whether via DNA we could ascertain which dog left droppings on the sidewalk of the city," Bar-On said. "The idea to build a DNA database for dogs in this context has already been proposed, but nobody has put it into practice."

DNA typing costs how much?
Cost and intrusiveness of obtaining DNA from dogs?
probability of a statistical match?

Return on investment?

suspect about $500,000 per “dog arrest”
money much better spent otherwise

Electrifying Fire hydrants - Priceless

In the words of Joe Biden, it's about three letters, JOBS, J-O-B-S.

Forget the expense, three letters, J-O-B-S

This DNA testing of dog poop is about the dumbest idea ever to come out of Israel. It's analogous to using an atomic bomb to kill a pesky fly: the cost is prohibitive compared to the potential benefit.

My guess is that the mayor of Petah Tikvah is a huge socialist and statist. It takes someone with a such a warped ideology to think in such terms.

Yeah, the dog’s cute but I was talking about the steaming pile behind it.

Yes, it’s stupid, but it’s just one mayor. Who never would have been mentioned in the world press were it not for his poop iniative.

Clearly, Israeli laboratories have too much free time on their hands.

Cost of countless DNA tests = $$$$$$
Cost of just hiring someone to sweep up = $
DNA database of dog crap = priceless.

The flies here are pesky beyond endurance. It’s a good thing I don’t have an a-bomb handy. As for dog poop, I’d rather do a comparative study with donkey poop, just to be contrary.
