Health Emergency? Dial 911, Not U.N. Medical Services

Tuesday, September 08, 2009 By Tom McGregor

With a full medical team of eight doctors and 11 registered nurses — and a budget of $38 million — the occupational health clinic at the United Nations should have all the resources it needs to meet any kind of emergency.

Yet the U.N. Medical Services Division (MSD) offers this important piece of advice for any U.N. employee in New York City who suffers a life-threatening condition at work:

Don't call us. Call 9-1-1.

On Aug. 24, the United Nations Office issued a statement to its entire New York staff about "steps to follow in a medical emergency":

"Step 1. Call ... 911 from UN office phone.

"Step 2. If it is a serious injury, render first aid assistance if you are trained to do so.

"Step 3. Call the UN Fire and Safety Unit.

"Step 4. When trained staff arrives, describe the first aid already administered and once again advise if you have called 911."

There's no Step 5. Nowhere does the United Nations advise its staff to call its own Medical Services Division in an emergency.

That could be because the MSD's director, Dr. Brian Davey, is not licensed to practice medicine in New York state. And while the group's head nurse, Neomy Mantin, is licensed as a registered nurse, many of the other nurses hired to work in the unit do not maintain credentials to treat patients in New York.

The UN has learned from both the Congress and Illegal Aliens: Don’t pay for medical yourself, shaft the American Taxpayers!

I hate the UN. I swear, any candidate who ran promising to pull out of the UN, collect on their traffic tickets, and tax the land they’re sitting on....would win in a heartbeat.

The team’s mission is not to actually PRACTICE medicine. It is to advise the world on such things as how to teach tykes how to do the unspeakable.

Where are the Republicans demanding accountability and re-imbursement? Why no howling protests at the State Department and Hillary?

The UN complex is big enough to have its own phone system. Do 911 calls there go to New York's emergency line or are they handled internally? I'm wondering because it says to call 911 from an office phone rather than a cell phone which would get connected to New York's system.

I work with a guy who came from the UN. He has redefined the term “a$$hole” for me many times over. Bloated, babbling idiot that knows everything yet he delivers nothing and asks for more resources.

First off the UN is sovereign territory and they have their own security force, fire department and postal administration.

They should also have their own medical care.

If they require service from Manhattan, they should be required, as a condition of service from another nation and a city within that nation, The United States, to pay for medical care.

They should provide a bond to ensure payment.

They should provide waivers of indemnifying responders as well.
