Lt. Gov. John Garamendi is virtually certain to survive a runoff with a token Republican opponent and extend his 35-year-long political career, which began with election to the Assembly in 1974, into the indefinite future as a congressman.
Garamendi emerged atop a field of candidates for the 10th Congressional District seat that Democrat Ellen Tauscher surrendered after taking a trade job in the Obama administration. The 10th District, which covers much of the Bay Area's eastern suburbs, has an 18-percentage-point Democratic registration margin, making the Nov. 3 runoff with Republican David Harmer a cakewalk.
The more uncertain aspect is whom Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who's rapidly approaching lame duck status, might appoint as Garamendi's successor for one year not that it matters very much, since it's easily the least important sinecure in state government.

Lordy, California is soooo dysfunctional. Garmendi for life. Now that’s a thought that sends shivers up me timbers. The dumb voters keep sending the same idiots to Congress and the state house and wonder why things are the way they are. For those out in the rest of sane California ( and that means pretty much anywhere that isn’t the LA Basin or SF Bay Area) there are solid conservatives who are getting screwed almost continuously. It is sooo frustrating.
Ah well. Pay attention rest of the Nation because this is your future if you don’t stop them NOW and reverse course
