The battle-scarred gangsters of Japan's most infamous underworld group, the Yamaguchi-gumi, are being forced to study for an exam covering the key aspects of their trade.

Gang bosses have introduced the written tests for their subordinates since the Anti-Organised Crime Law was revised last year, making the group's leaders responsible for the actions of street-level members.

In September 2008, two top members of the Sumiyoshi-kai underworld group agreed to pay Y97.5 million (£640,000) to the relatives of a man shot dead when three gunmen opened fire in a bar in Gunma Prefecture.

I would have expected nothing else; indeed, I am surprised that these exams didn’t exist until so recently.

A criminal gang outside of lawyers is finally learning the lawyer’s secret to success.

You know times are hard when even the mob is weeding out “employees” by test.

If Suziko takes 5,000 yen off a drunk businessman,
how much is Ichiro’s and how much is the godfather’s?

Good grief. This is like “Office Space” with honor amputations. Or the Zarkman Reports, if Zarky were Japanese.

Oh, this is sooooo Japanese...

But yes, it is a matter of reducing liability by enforcing discipline within the gang, a matter American Mafiosi have known about for decades (it was, after all, the motivation for The Godfather - "will our political protection dry up if we allow drug sales?").

But the Mob doesn't have office buildings and the Yamaguchi-gumi does. And if my old sources are correct, one heck of a lot more aggregate income than a million a month. Twelve mil a year for the Yamaguchi-gumi? I don't think so.

Not nearly enough swag for the swagger.

“If Suziko takes 5,000 yen off a drunk businessman,

Wow! $53 dollars! Major haul. :)

Answer, the godfather gets 4,000 yen.
Ichiro gets 1,000 yen.
The bar girl Suziko gets a black eye for not
picking a better mark.
