When President Barack Obama tries to salvage his healthcare agenda on Wednesday, it wont be the first time.
Obamas heavily anticipated address to a joint session of Congress comes just six weeks after the White House tried to reclaim the healthcare debate in a nationally televised primetime press conference.
Obama also held three town halls in August that were supposed to give him momentum after conservative opponents took control of the healthcare debate by criticizing Democratic proposals and lawmakers at local town halls.
Now some of Obamas allies in Congress say he needs to spell out his demands in this weeks joint address if he is to regain momentum he failed to gain from those earlier appearances.

He out and out lied when he said the detractors of his plan offer nothing in return. He said that the GOP alternative was to "do nothing," and he lied through his teeth.
He will be called on it, and I hope mercilessly. Clearly, his vacation only resulted in hardening his stance and spewing more lies.
The American people have awakened and are set against this government take-over and monstrosity. And they will extract a stiff payment in 2010 which will neuter this administration, and then send him packing in 2012.

“Obama also held three town halls in August that were supposed to give him momentum after conservative opponents took control of the healthcare debate by criticizing Democratic proposals and lawmakers at local town halls.”
Liberal media going nuts. They absorbed the Democrats’ creepy meme about “controlling” a debate, that is Obama doing it, and projecting it on opponents. IOW, they don’t want a debate, that want the facsimile of a debate.
Obushma. Obama playing Bush II cards on immigration. “Gimme this because I’m powerful. And I’m giving a speech. And I’m having town halls that backfire. I’ll call you racist if you don’t.”
I predict that Obama will frequently use the words “immoral” “morality” and “moral” in his upcoming speech. Starting last week, this appeared to be the new talking point. That it is “immoral” that 40 million people have no health care and that imposing government health care is the “moral” thing to do.
“I predict that Obama will frequently use the words immoral morality and moral in his upcoming speech””
Bush was the model. Same textbook?
Obama already deployed the “get the preachers” tactic with some phone calls. I won’t say it was half-hearted because the arrogant O probably thought one conference call was more than it takes.
“Robert Gibbs insisted that Obama will draw some lines in the sand on healthcare”
While it’s not clear Clinton EVER could have gotten a health bill enacted, there is widespread consensus that one of his mistakes was “drawing a line in the sand” by threatening to veto a bill that didn’t guarantee universal coverage. That insistence essentially boxed in congressional negotiators, leaving them unable to find a mutually agreeable compromise.
We can hope that Obama makes a similar mistake, but realistically, the reason we’re where we are is because he is way too chicken to say in black and white where he stands. His style of “leadership” is to find a parade and run ahead of it, claiming to be its leader.
You said it. Some wondered if he could make the leap from city council (can't recall offhand his exact title) to the rigors of the presidency. I think he leaped into the campaign alright. But it's as if ok, he's in, now what? He's still in campaign mode.
I watched part of his Labor Day speech today. Be afraid, be very afraid.
This guy is dangerous; he’s really good at rabble rousing and stirring emotion. He is back in campaign mode, and white hot.
Watching him, so comfortable in his out of the mainstream rhetoric, his preacher cadence, brought a few thoughts to mind
Whether Malcolm X is his biological father or not, he is Malcolm X’s spiritual and political heir. Look at pictures of the two side by side and note the resemblance, the mannerisms, the body structure and body language. Natural by his DNA or purposefully studied and calculatecd? For you to judge.
The second image it brought to mind is way uglier... Hitler or Lenin haranguing the cheering, delirious crowds when they came to power.
Don’t ever underestimate Obama He is very good at speechifying and “electrifying” the crowds.
Fortunately for America, he can’t give that kind of speech in front of Congress
