Barack Obama support a bit shaky in Illinois, Tribune poll finds

Though Illinoisans displayed a measure of pride when Barack Obama was elected to the presidency almost a year ago, rising unemployment and his push for a controversial health-care reform package have left fewer than six in 10 voters in his home state approving of the job he has done in the White House, a new Tribune/WGN poll found.

The survey of 700 registered voters in Illinois showed 59 percent approved of the job the Democratic president has done in his nearly eight months in the Oval Office, while one-third disapproved of Obama's performance. Eight percent had no opinion in the poll, which has an error margin of 4 percentage points.

On its face, a near-60 percent job approval rating would be welcomed by just about any politician -- but the poll indicated several troubling signs for Obama.

Voters were almost equally split over his handling of health-care reform -- 42 percent approving and 43 percent against. While 58 percent approved of his overall handling of the economy, 49 percent said his economic policies had little if any effect on the job picture. Forty-five percent thought his policies had at least some impact.

The results of the poll, conducted Aug. 27-31, indicate many of Obama's home-state voters have the same concerns that voters have shown in national polling, where confusion over a complicated health-care reform plan and continued worries about employment have taken an even greater toll on the president's approval rating.

A CNN national poll conducted between Aug. 28-31 showed a 53 percent job approval, representing a steady downward trend from the 67 percent who approved after his first month in office.

This article is a little dated and very biased, but it's a lot more than just "a bit shaky" when the support in his home state is this low this soon

a measure of pride

A measure of pride? That's a good one.

Has the inauguration party in Chicago even stopped? Has Chicago taken down the Obama banners?

What's unfortunate is that the good people of Illinois will learn nothing, even if Obama drives the nation to ruin. They will be of the mind that Obama's policies failed only because they met opposition, or because he lacked the will to see them through. They will never see the truth in Obama's failure because they support his flawed ideology themselves.

The zombies will whine and moan, but they will be in Obama's pocket forever, and they will overwhelmingly vote for him in 2012, regardless of the economic circumstances.
