A Wichita priest was arrested early Friday and jailed for sex crimes at a local park. Father Doug Campbell, 64, is the pastor at St. Jude Parish in North Wichita.
The news spread very quickly Friday afternoon among parishioners at the church in the 3000 block of North Amidon. Father Campbell was arrested during a sex crimes sting at Oak Park.
"I believe there was undercover and surveillance both used in this incident," said Wichita Police Captain Darrell Haynes.
Campbell was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail at 4:40 Friday morning and posted bail. He was held on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior, public nudity, and remaining in a park after hours. He posted bail shortly after and was released. He has a municipal court appearance scheduled for August 27th.
We did attempt to contact Father Campbell at the parish rectory. As we walked up the driveway, a car pulled out of the driveway. The driver, however, said he was not Father Campbell and refused to speak to us. Nobody answered the door of the residence.

Felonious Monk?
Pray for the Church.
No doubt this will be portrayed in the media ad nauseum.
however, I hope , if he is guilty, the church moves quickly and openly to deal with this situation.

Agree about the media jackals. Prayers for the priest and church. BTW, my comment was an obscure reference to jazz great Thelonious Monk (October 10, 1917 February 17, 1982) who wrote “Round Midnight,” among other great tunes.
yeah, i got that..good obscure ref..he was one ( is one ) of my favorites.
the "Church" will move him to some place to "heal" and repent, maybe undergo counseling. Then they'll move him to another parish where he can continue his priestly homosexual duties.
From past performance this may include a payment if young boys are involved or just a shrug if not.
Men that are in the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy allowed this to happen and continue to allow this behavior probably because of the shortage of priests and the fact that homosexuals have infiltrated and perpetrated their presence into the seminaries and upper echelons of the church.
Of course those that want to see this as a way crush the Church will use it as a weapon against the church...... others may want to take the Church back from the liberals and deceivers in the Church that perpetrate these disgusting behaviors ,allow abortion supporters a pulpit at Catholic universities, and allow clowns like the Kennedys to highlight the hypocrisy of what money will buy in the church while condemning capitalism and greed.
re: Prayers for the priest and church
Amen! I’m sure it’s of little consolation to the priest and his flock but there’s virtually no great man of the Bible who didn’t have flaws, some much more serious than those outlined here. Adultery compounded by murder, but only after numerous attempts to cover up the pregnancy of the woman involved, is just a sample of what the people of God have done and will continue to do.
Sin is a fact of life. Because it’s inevitable, one of Satan’s most potent tools is to convince us that since we’ve already sinned God hates us and we might as well just forget about Him and trying to live up to His expectations for us. The last thing Satan wants us to realize is that God knows all about sin, so much so that He made arrangements, even before anyone had sinned, to handle the situation. In fact, if even one of us could live committing a sin, regardless of nature or severity, then God’s sacrifice of His only son would be a waste. But it’s not, and we can’t. Paul said it well, when he asked if since the more sin the more grace God has for us if we shouldn’t sin as much as possible and get all that grace! He answered his own question with a resounding NO.
Much of how this priest makes it through this time of testing in his life will depend on how his congregation reacts and how the church handles it. I pray the will seek God’s guidance and counsel in the matter!
He needs to be gone from the priesthood but going to (I assume) the local gay pickup spot for some action doesn't make him a "sex criminal" assuming his pickups aren't underage. "Sex crime" is a very loaded phrase in today's world and in the absence of an assault on an unwilling or underage person, it's not fair to use.
Well said.
From the article:
*****It is important to note that these charges against Father Campbell are only misdemeanors and do not involve children*****
Just to save speculatin’
Seriously, the most recent of the arrested in my archdiocese, I hear from a childhood friend of his, was never known for social astuteness. Along with the return to the old method of screening for the seminary (pre-1960), maybe this should be one of the topics assessed.
Agreed. Pray for priests and all clergy.
This is an old story. There is nothing new in this article. Why are we running it again?
Didn’t know this was an old story, thought it was new. Sorry for the double post.
Exactly how should the media portray this? I do not understand your comment. Apparently this man was in the park after hours else the police would not have arrested him.
Unless he paid for services, its not a crime...unless prohibited in a park.
Agree, he needs to be gone from the priesthood.
what I meant is that the media focus on the sensational about priests, and then go on and on. Yes, the media should report it, what I object to is the sensationalism and acting as if only priests do this.
I have basically given up on television news, so I cannot comment about how many times the media have reported on this arrest. And this is the first time I have seen the story, and information presented by other posters.
Obviously I missed the initial report, but thus far I have seen nothing that could begin to be categorized as sensational. And it should be no surprised how the media is going to react to anyone priest and or preacher arrested in a park after hours. Look what the media help liberals do to President Bush and he was never caught in a park after hours.
Excellant points.
