WATERBURY, Conn. - Connecticut residents are arming themselves at quite a clip, with women, in particular, packing heat in growing numbers.

The state issued 7,741 pistol permits from January through May, a 90 percent increase over the same time period in 2008. Nearly 12,000 new permits have been issued so far this year in a state that recently posted one of the lowest gun ownership rates in the country, according a study of 2006 data by the Violence Policy Center, a national gun control advocacy group based in Washington, D.C.

Connecticut gun retailers and educators who run the safety classes required for pistol permit applicants report a surge in first-time gun purchases, particularly by women . . .

It appears as though the ladies have quickly figured out what a hopey changey kind of nation really means.

Keep in mind that Connecticut is the wealthiest state in the country, and these women are rightfully protecting themselves against the coming onslaught from the crime-ridden areas like New Haven.

Some of these small towns are having problems with their unionized police forces. Used to be cops made a little less than everyone else but had security. They were part of the fabric of towns, made arrests as a last resort and were trusted and respected. Now we see them set up seatbelt check roadblocks to raise money.

The force in Madison, a small affluent shoreline community is a mess. Cop got caught on tape breaking into a restaurant and stealing lobsters. Then others got caught with prostitutes and forging time sheets. Its costing the town millions.

Apparently many people are not willing to rely on them as they have in the past.

I got my Ct permit in February. When buying my pistol on a Saturday morning in Monroe about 10 -12 women came out through a door in the back of the store obviously a pistol class and as they left the store the instructor mentioned it was too bad they could not afford to live in a better neighborhood. My guess is they were from Bridgeport and showed up as a group. Local Gun shops packed middle of the week, middle of the day I am surprised the numbers were not higher

I am 5 miles out of New Haven and probably have not visited downtown N.H. in the last 5 years.

Just the huge criminal illegal alien population in CT and its predilection for crimes against women is enough of a reason that so many of these women are getting armed and ready.

It’s easier to carry a gun than a cop.

“Connecticut residents” How’s that change working for you? The greatest gun salesman in America is still selling guns and ammo. You ladies are the ones most likely to need a pistol but least likely to have one. I’m glad you have seen the light, now shoot strait.

There was a recent front-page headline in our very liberal paper on a Sunday talking about how gun permits were up nearly 60% or more since January.

When I was 15 my girlfriend's parents dropped us off on the New Haven Green at dusk for a Brubeck concert.

Left CT for many years and when I returned 4 years ago and saw New Haven I was sickened. Live 20 miles east of the city now and, like you, never go into it.

Yes. That is what makes it news and so interesting. Be news too if gun sales were not up in Texas and Georgia.

I can’t say I’m surprised. Here locally in Alabama, gun sales haven’t slowed a bit, especially for handguns. I believe people smell something in the air and don’t like it a bit.

Never underestimate the power of capitalism. Firearms are a market force in and of themselves when in the right hands.

A Liberal friend has a son that is Harvard and Yale material. Took him to Yale. Dad is sharp, asked a local cabbie what is the real skinny. Cabbie says don’t venture a block away from the campus. Ironically he has found a College in CA that does not have the PC mantra, and may head their....

I am not sticking up for law enforcement shenanigan's, but one of my gnomes tells me the PC stuff they have to do as officers in CT and the training, they are hamstrung.
