A Scottish-born man who was shot dead in front of his son in Sydney was in possession of a tape capable of bringing down the New South Wales state Labour government, it has been claimed.

Michael McGurk, a well-known loan shark, was arriving at his multi-million-dollar home with his 10-year-old son on Thursday evening when he was shot once in the head by a lone gunman.

Michael McGurk

Mr McGurk, 46, had been due to appear in court the following day in relation to a complex property dispute.

Since his death, it has emerged that he met with journalists from the Sydney Morning Herald in the days before the murder.

During the meeting he claimed to have made a tape of a conversation containing revelations of corruption within the NSW government and said he was concerned for his life.

Jim Byrnes, a business associate of Mr McGurk's who has served time in jail, has also claimed that following the meeting the dead man's home and office were ransacked by people trying to find and destroy the tape.

Mr Byrnes claimed Mr McGurk was shot in the head outside his home in the northern Sydney suburb of Cremorne because he had threatened to go public with allegations that senior state MPs had accepted payments from businessmen in return for favours.

"It's a pretty well established fact that there was supposed to be a tape recording of a lengthy conversation that he had with a person ...

and that tape recording related to supposed financial payments to very senior politicians within the state," he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"Had that tape seen the light of day you might be seeing two or three politicians no longer being politicians."

However, Graham Richardson, a former Labour party power broker,

I hope he had multiple “in the event of my death” clauses in place, preferably even some overseas.

Things never change in New South Wales. To illustrate:

Fifteen years after the HMS Bounty mutiny, William Bligh was appointed Governor of New South Wales in Australia, with orders to clean up the corrupt rum trade of the New South Wales Corps, resulting in the so-called Rum Rebellion.

I like this last line from the article :

Mr McGurk made many enemies in his tough dealings, and believed he had a price on his head after a series of business disputes. He was also millions of dollars in debt.

You think given his "occupation", he would have known better .

Is it like here, Labour = socialist, communist, Marxist?

Guns were not banned or confiscated in Australia. This is a myth that, for some reason, has gained a huge amount of currency in the US. Australia does have some quite stringent gun control laws (universal licencing, universal registration, for example) but guns are still legal and there are millions of firearms legally held by private citizens.

Yes.

The Labor party in Australia is socialist.

The Liberal Party however is a conservative party (it is often in coalition with a second conservative party, the National Party).

Really? Oh that's wonderful news! I am so glad to hear that my friends down there didn't really have to turn in all their class D firearms (all semi-auto and pump action non-rimfire long guns as well as all handguns in meaningful calibers) like they said they did. I must say that I am greatly relieved to hear that it was all in their heads. And to think, they told me that all of you "subjects" were now effectively limited to pre-1890's firearm technology (bolt-actions and break-actions), and only then if you can prove to the government that you have a "genuine reason" to be graced with a permit for registration. Thank you for setting all of us Americans free from the "myths" we hold about the present state of freedom in your Utopian commonwealth. </s>

Nice try at sarcasm, mate, but I happen to be Category D licenced (also handgun licenced, with a few A/Bs as well).

I live here. I know the laws. I know how they work.
