House Dem: There will be no bipartisan bill By Michael O'Brien - 09/06/09 11:14 AM ET
There will be no bipartisan healthcare reform bill, one member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus flatly declared Sunday.
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said that there wouldn't be the bipartisan bill favored by the president and some centrist Democrats, with Republicans to blame.
"I appreciate the work that's been done by the president to try and get a bipartisan bill, but there will be no bipartisan bill," Waters said during an appearance on ABC.
"The Republicans are not going to support a credible health care reform bill led by the president or the Democrats," Waters explained. "We're not going to get their support."
President Obama has long said he would prefer for there to be bipartisan support for healthcare reform, a priority shared by some leading centrist Democrats in the Senate who have been working on a health bill. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the lead Republican negotiator on a bipartisan bill as ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, has also said he would like to see 70 or 80 votes for a health bill.
Waters asserted that Obama had reached out enough, but simply could not expect Republicans to come around on the bill.
"This president has reached across the aisle. He's done everything," she said. "He's stroked, he's cajoled, he's begged, but the Republicans are not supporting him."
Sounds like good advertising for Republicans!
Maxine Waters - a perfect definition of mindless.
This woman brings “dumb” to unexplored depths.
She could suck the smart out of a rock.
If you Google “idiot”, it would reply, “You idiot, it’s Maxine.”
On a positive note his approval ratings at least aren't at zero........yet.
The Republicans we vote for in 2010 must swear to reject anything that this administration passes...anything!!
“This president has reached across the aisle. He’s done everything,” she said. “He’s stroked, he’s cajoled, he’s begged, but the Republicans are not supporting him.”
did he support the ‘Whole Foods’ plan? noooo
so don’t tell me he tried everything.
I sure hope so.
xlnt
LOL. Is that Bush’s fault? I wonder where that’s been.
Hussein and Maxine: Two socialists whose mission is to destroy capitalism.
Does ANYONE have the video of Maxine telling the oil executive she basically wanted to SEIZE the company and socialize it?? I remember that happening sometime last year....
Good. OWN it, Maxine!
Oh, he has been below zero in my household for a long time. :)
Agreed, but it is also important that we do NOT vote for stealth ‘Rats (as in Specter, Snowe, et al). It does no good to have an “R” by the name if they actually vote “D.”
“This president has reached across the aisle. He’s done everything,” she said. “He’s stroked, he’s cajoled, he’s begged, but the Republicans are not supporting him.”
Exactly. When your ‘We won, it’s our way or the highway’ opponents are pouring gasoline on themselves and are about to light the match, one doesn’t jump into the fire with them.
I watched this round table discussion. (I wanted to see what Georgie Boy had to say about Van Jones.) Tom Daschle, Bob Dole, Mike Pence, and Maxine Waters were guests. Bob Dole looks old. His speech is slow and his thoughts are sort of rambling.
Mike Pence stood his ground and did a good job defending our position. Tom Daschle wouldn’t make eye contact or even look directly at Pence as he attacked the Republicans in Congress. He’s such a weasle. Pence looked straight at him the whole time and never flinched or wavered.
Maxine Waters attacked Pence outright asking where the Republican healthcare bill was. She said the lack of partisanship was all about Obama. It was clearly a race card thrown out on the table. Pence ignored it.
Dole slipped in a few one-liners that had everybody chuckling. Daschle made the comment that there were no more Bob Doles in the Senate. Dole said, “Yeah and I need work!”
Anyway Waters was clear that the Democrats would push forward on healthcare without Republican support and she was pretty clear they really don’t want a bipartisan bill either. Of course they don’t because they’d have to put tort reform and interstate purchasing ability in the bill.
Just what work has Obama done to get that bi-partisan bill? I haven’t heard of any concrete proposals by the president, have you?
