No, the problem with the institutional culture of many law enforcement agencies is that it inculcates an attitude in LEOs not of obedience to the law, but of demanding obedience to their office, and their person. The law is circumscribed by the First Amendment, but try exercising your right to freedom of speech to criticize a LEO.

The “serve” in the fairly common motto of local law-enforcement agencies (cf. LAPD’s “To protect and serve”) somehow or other gets lost.

Gee whiz GreyMountain, now I’m getting even more confused.

According to alot of folks here, I am a thug. And a Nazi, etc. etc. And, I think Van wants the police to leave him alone too, at least that’s what I’ve been hearing.

Now, after that spot of fun,

Which is worse? People who want cops to leave them alone or people who want to turn cops into thugs?

That’s a good question. I’m not at the top of either groups party invitations. It’s like turning from AK sights to AR sights, you get shot either way, whether you deserved it or not.

I suppose that what I think is it’s increasingly difficult being a policeman in a society that is breaking down. The State is getting increasingly overbearing and using the police as muscle. Both sides of the spectrum resent the intrusion, justly so, but one side continues to elect tyrannical leaders. I think that soon individual police officers will have to decide which side they are going to be on. Things seem to be deteriorating rather rapidly and the next few years look rather unpleasant to me. Though I believe the outcome is not in doubt.

I have had to reflect, study, pray, prepare and put into practice what I believe as a police officer and an American. Particularly the oaths I took when I joined the Marines and joined the police dept.

I’m participating in Tea Party’s, calling my congressmen and senators, getting together with like-minded officers and individuals. And I’m going to Washington Sept. 12th.

I know which side I’m on. It may sound like I’m tooting my own horn but I’m not. It does bother me that cops get lumped together and painted with the same brush by both sides. No matter what I do or say, it appears that I will be considered ‘suspect’ by both. In the crossfire. I don’t care what the left thinks, they are the enemies of this country.

The ‘friendly fire’ is what bothers me. I just remind myself that I am nothing more than how I stand before the eyes of Almighty God. And keep moving forward.

In the words of Forrest Gump, ‘and that’s all I have to say about that.’
