A few hundred protesters rallied in downtown Miami on a soggy Friday as part of a worldwide effort calling for the removal of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.
``I want to do anything I can against the tyranny of Chávez,'' said Pablo Carrillo, 25, an economics student at Florida International University who came to South Florida two years ago for his studies. ``I'm here for solidarity for those who suffer in Venezuela.''
The afternoon protest at the Torch of Friendship in downtown Miami -- a longtime setting for rallies for overseas causes -- was part of a day of protests against the Chávez administration, which they say is trying to expand its left-leaning reach; it was called ``No More Chávez'' -- a popular chant Friday in the flag-waving crowd of young people and elderly.
Cuba and Honduras flags were also on display.
As if taking a cue from the gigantic protests that engulfed Iran in June, this one was organized with the help of Facebook and other social-networking media.
Miami Dade College student Andrea Montero learned about the rally via Facebook. So did fellow student Emmanuel Delfino.
``Excellent source for this type of thing,'' said Delfino, 19, hoisting a large Venezuelan flag over his shoulder.
Delfino and Andrea Montero, 17, said they attended the rally because the ``tyranny'' in their native Venezuela prevented them from studying there.
``We'd love to be there and study there because it's our country, but can't,'' said Andrea.
The crowd, unified in its opposition to the Venezuelan president, offered a variety of placards.
Among them: ``Take out terrorist tyrant. Hell awaits him.''
I appreciate the point and effort these people are making, but I think their outcry of indignation and condemnation would be better focused on ostammer and what’s happening here - the fact that ostammer wants to be a dictator just like Chavez.
"Solidarity" as a concept is not so far removed from Chavez. Mr. Carillo would likely vote another like Chavez into office, given the opportunity, and then express dumbfounded surprise and outrage at the inevitable excesses.
Heavy social control by a government always leads to tyranny. The US has been the only thing holding it back, for almost a century. Now, it appears that we're heading down that road, ourselves.
Well, they could go back there and actually do something about Chavez, rather than standing around in Miami and waving South American flags. Yes, I am sick of seeing flags from Honduras, Venezuela, et al.
[fact that ostammer wants to be a dictator just like Chavez.]
Only conservatives know that though.
Obama is deeply saddened.
