No doubt. Probably are saving every penny for ‘Burning Man’, too. ;-)

looks like whoever was operating that trackhoe may have had experience,

Local Operating Engineers Union ?

pulling the legs from the side, (thats where the power is with a hoe), that was no amateur. Or else they got lucky, Dark angels watching over them I guess.

CAT, and the contractors, really should start issuing coded keys for their heavy equipment. All the keys are the same to make it simple for the operators and maintenence crews.

I could walk up to just about any machine and fire it up with the keys I have. Somebody could just get the operators manual inside the cab and find all the controls pretty quick

Some smart contractors add steel plates with case hardened padlocks over the cab doors and windows

They had 2 towers. Most AM stations have multiple towers. It’s how they create the shape of the broadcast area covered. 1 tower would tend to give you a perfect circle. Multiple towers allow you to extend your range in specific directions. FM stations antennas are different in this manner. If you’re interested in why it works this way I’m sure you can find more than you’d ever want to know on the internet. Also you can touch an FM mast but if you touch an AM antenna and mast when it’s broadcasting you’ll be a crispy critter. The entire mast in an AM station is the thing that radiates the power and if you touch it you’re the ground the entire output would go to ground through you. The actual FM antenna is on top (or if they have multiple stations using the tower) in various places on the tower. Wouldn’t touch the FM antenna when it’s radiating but the tower sure.

All four were in use, or shortly to be in use, in a major upgrade to the station’s power.

The reason for multiple towers fed by a common AM transmitter is to beam the signal away from directions where it would cause interference to other, distant stations on or near the same frequency.

The mutiple towers, when fed with transmitter power in carefully calculated powers and phases, “squeeze” the radiation away from those protected stations and into the directions in between where, hopefully, there are nearby concentrations of listeners.

This is directionality is particularly often needed at night, when a given amount of transmitted signal in the AM band travels further.

In the present case, they had until recently been broadcasting using two towers at 5 KW, with different patterns for day and for night.

The large self-supporting tower that was toppled was part of a new upgrade that was, or was about to be, used as the single non-directional radiator during daytime, at 34 KW, seven times their previous power.

[[How they got a license for that after running for many years on the same frequency with 5 KW on a two-tower directional system, your correspondent understandeth not.]]

The nighttime pattern went from two towers at 5 KW to four towers at 34 KW, with an application on file for increase to 50 KW. The towers are comprised of the original two, a third very similar one, and the aforementioned single large self-supported one to be used by itself during the day.

(: OK so I’m a RadioHead. Get me going and it’s hard to stop :)

"Wonder if they have a "loose" connection to Acorn - or any of The Kenyan's other favorites?"

Nah. That's a little to much work for the ACORN types.

They just stand around, make noise, blame you for everything bad and demand more of your money.

IIRC, their roots are from the SDS, and basically Bill Ayers. Basically, they are anarchists who found their niche.
