Students, Parents Protest Use of 'Negro' in Student Code of Conduct Form
Sun Sentinel ^ | 9/4/09

A dated, racially loaded description for black people was included in the 2009 edition of the Broward students' code of conduct book, prompting angry telephone calls from some parents and a student at Deerfield Beach High School to start a petition against the word's use.

A Broward School District form for parents to sign and return asked for their children's racial background. The form included the word "Negro" as an acceptable description, in addition to black or African American.

That form went out in more than 250,000 student code of conduct books throughout the district.

Schools are supposed to collect student information by race and ethnicity using new categories from the state Department of Education, said Broward Schools Superintendent James Notter. The district created its form using categories and descriptions from the state Department of Education.

The Department of Education, in turn, got its wording from the federal Office of Management and Budget, said Education Department spokesman Tom Butler.

The state has since changed its wording to eliminate "Negro" as an acceptable term, he said.

Last week, the Broward district sent out a memo and copies of new forms for students to take to their parents but not before upsetting some parents and students such as Jake Edri, 15, of Sunrise, a sophomore in Deerfield Beach High's communications broadcast arts magnet program.

Edri noticed the word when he read through his code of conduct book last week. He was shocked at the description next to "Black or African American," especially since other categories didn't include additional terms.

"For white, it doesn't use Caucasian," Edri said.

So Edri took action. He got his principal's permission, then teamed up with a friend to collect signatures during lunch and before school, netting more than 200 signatures in nearly three days.

Two thoughts ..

1.) get over it , negro isn’t a derogatory term and “african American” is meaningless , my best friend in H.S. was a white from South Africa who got a scholarship to college as an “African American”...
2.) We have got to get the federal gov’t out of the schools ,, this “survey” can only be connected somehow with federal funding.

I remember in 1968, July sitting in the US Pavilion of the San Antonio HEMISPHERE, and listening to the brown people of America argue about whether they were Hispanic, Latinos, Chicanos, Mexicans, Spanish, the Raza, the Wetbacks... and they came up with the Hyphentated, Hispanic-Americans..I guess.

Words do change meaning over the years. i wouldn't want someone to say I am gay, if blacks don't want to be called negro that is fine.

It is a shame but that is how the ball bounces.

I wonder if the United Negro College Fund would care to weigh in on this tempest-in-a-teapot.

Isn’t “Negro” Spanish for Black? If so, they may want to go to school and get educated.

Time was, of course, when “Negro” was the way polite people of good will referred to African-Americans, as was “colored” even longer ago. The word “Black” is already on the way out too, among some of the more prickly members of the group. I wonder how long it will take for “African-American” itself to become dated and offensive, and then what will we say?

Is there a national conference, where all the minorities meet to decide what we should call them? (From "The Goode Family" -- paraphrased.)

We just got a new “trigger” word for Blacks.

Negro.

Must be at least 200 words we cannot use to reference “These People” or is that a trigger word too. LMAO
Ever hear the Chegroe joke.

The Red Bugs formed an association. NAARB ,The National Association of Red Bugs.

“Us Red Bugs dont want to be called Chiggers any more we want to be called Chegroes.”

I guess the Chegroes need a new name now too.

We have gone through a litany of terms to describe racial differences.

African-American is not a race, it is a national identity; I posit that the vast majority of blacks in this country do not fall in the category African-American because they do not hold dual citizenship.

‘We can have no “50-50″ allegiance in this country. Either a man is an American and nothing else, or he is not an American at all’.

'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'
Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Correct. He had no problem with it and neither should anyone else. As an earlier poster described, us white folks are called 'caucasian' and I take no offense by it.

Should I demand that I be referred to as an Anglo-Saxon-American? How about German-Scottish-Danish-American?

Where does the hyphenation end?

I don’t normally think of myself as a “caucasian,” and I’m not even sure what it means beyond the imagination of race-classifying pseudo-scientists of the nineteenth century. Still, I hate to think how many forms I’ve filled out certifying that that’s what I am. Less likely to make trouble than if I cross it out and write in something else, like “human” or “American.”
