If the Russians wanted to ship anything to the Iranians the voyage would have been Astrakhan - Caspian Sea - Bandar-e Anzali. Shipping to Syria or Hamas, perhaps rebels against Hosni Mubarak? Different answer. Someone where the Russians wanted an “innocent” transhipment point in Algeria to provide cover.
Now they're extremely unhappy since their "non-involvement" is so badly compromised.
