Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe has shown throughout her career that when it comes to voting, it's her principles and constituents that guide her, not her party. Those principles, analysts note, are guiding her to find a compromise on health care reform currently stalemated in Congress.
Jennifer Duffy, who follows the Senate for the Cook Political Report, said Snowe's independent streak is "not new behavior for her."
"I think they [Republicans] also realize that the only reason that the state of Maine has two Republican senators at all is the fact that they are very independent-minded and they vote their state," she said, referring to Snowe and Sen. Susan Collins.
In fact, some estimates place Snowe as having voted with her party only 57 percent of the time in the current Congress.

Why doesn’t the Republican party have the cajones to throw Snowe and Collins out???
I think you made a mistake with the title of the article and replaced a “f” with a “b”.
That would make the title abso-frappin-loutely correct.
Obviously posturing to become the 60th vote.
In other words, she is a liberal who occasionally votes Republican.
I’m shocked, shocked I tell you, that CNN never runs article about “mavericks” on the Democrat side who buck their party’s leadership. Interestingly, this works out well for Republicans in the end, as in the mid-term election voters are more likely to vent their anger on ALL Democrats, because nobody bothered to write about all the blue dog Democrats who sided with the Republicans!
ruh-roh...more demmies backing down from the public option....
hey snowe white, you’d sticking out like a sore thumb more and more each day.
Uh, she doesn’t vote her constituents as CNN opines. She claimed phone calls to her office were running 3 to 1 against the Spendulus bill (later audits showed it was closer to 7/1), but she voted for it anyway.
She votes her values alright... she has the values of an ignorant communist, and the mind of a brick to back it all up.
The press needs their useful idiot Republican. It was McCain until he ran so they threw him overboard, then Specter and now Snowe. She’s on the committee that is handling the Senate version of Health care so that helps too. If she’ll buy the stimulus she’ll buy almost anything.
The “party” should buck her and any Repub that crosses over to compromise on ObamaCare.
Write her off. Obama has had private White House meetings with Snowe. The old bat has the hots for Obama. She belongs to him now.
"Let's kill him, for revenge"
"No, we can't, we'll get life"
"We need to kill him to send a message"
"Let's compromise"
"Ok, we'll maim and cripple him for life but not kill him"
"Done"
If she bucked her party she’d vote with the Republicans now and then.
