Bexar County's (San Antonio,Tx.) two largest school districts said today they will not show President Obama's controversial 'address to students' in their schools, and will leave it up to parents whether the speech should be viewed by their kids, 1200 WOAI news reports.
The speech, which is set for 11AM CDT on Tuesday, has become controversial, because many conservative groups have said they are afraid the president will use the speech to try to convince children to support his political policies, and convince their parents to do the same.
"What North East ISD is going to do is tape the President's address and place it on our web site, where parents can access it and watch it at home if they so choose," North East's Deb Caldwell said.
Northside is adopting a similar policy, saying the district's web site will link to the speech and it will be up to parents whether to watch it or not.
At North East, Caldwell says the speech is set to occur during the start of the lunch period, which is a very hectic time of day and a time when many students aren't in their classrooms anyway, but she says there are no plans to show it in class at any time.
"We will have the link available for those parents who do want to show it to their students at home, but we don't plan to show it during the school day," Caldwell said.
Some parents have requested that schools which will show the speech allow their child to 'opt out.' Those districts say there will be no punishment for students who choose not to watch the speech, and for teachers who chose not to teach it.
Caldwell says North East parents should not consider keeping their kids home.
"If parents are thinking about keeping their students at home because they don't want them to see the address, that's not an issue in North East, because we won't be airing it," she said.
I used to live up in Bulverde when I played for Augie Meyers and I haven’t heard anything from up there yet, BUT, it’s early in the day and I’ll give everybody updates as I get them.
Never fall for the opt out option on anything. It is a trick to “NUDGE” you into doing something and to kids it is a stigma. This is just like signing up for a free book in a book club and then you are automatically IN unless and until you OPT OUT. No more of this opting out stuff. It is a tactic.
I went to Roosevelt many years ago in the NEISD - I got a good education compared to some around here! Good call on their part!
But there are advantages to being elected President. The day after I was elected, I had my high school grades classified Top Secret. - Ronald Reagan
Don't wrooy, Austin ISD will probably FORCE the kids to watch this crap.
wrooy = worry
Especially when this video will also supposedly be shown.

I’ve got an idea, let the “O” do his speech & then right after it, let Glenn Beck talk to all the school children!!!!!
KLBJ announced that AISD was leaving it up to individual teachers to decide.
When the Office of President gets it's own teleprompter, I will.
As for the man infesting it...that's another story.
Wow, that is good to know. My daughter is a sub in the Katy ISD and she will NOT have that garbage in her room.
I remember you bringing that up in 2001 when Bush was visiting a school on 9/11.
A school.
To read a book and the book was not Heather has two mommies.
A school; is quite different than a President addressing every public school K-12 in the nation.
As well as how would you feel if this video

were shown when Bush was in? With all of the brainwashed rich hollywood elite liberals saying all of this bull crap leftist ideals, we love the world kumbaya don’t use plastic bags, we are millionaires and like to act like this, crap and then in the end saying ‘SERVE THE PRESIDENT’?
I was responding to your general comment. Politicians visit schools all the time. It’s so cute!
That’s a pretty sound decision.
Last I heard, the Austin ISD was leaving it up to the teachers (Libs) to make the choice.
