Gennaro Angiulo’s military burial raises eyebrows, ire

Before Gennaro “Jerry” Angiulo was a high-ranking Mafioso in charge of the Boston mob, he was a Navy chief serving his country during wartime, and he earned the flag that will cover his coffin, local vets said. But the idea that one-time Patriarca family underboss, alleged to have ordered beatings and killings, will be laid to rest today with full military honors isn’t sitting well with some vets. At an undisclosed cemetery today, six Navy pallbearers will carry his coffin, a sailor with a bugle blowing taps, and seven others will fire a salute for the departed don. “He should have got the firing squad years ago,” said Army vet John Balutowski, 46.

If he served honorably during his enlistment, and was honorably discharged from the Navy; he is entitled to a military funeral.

Not all the vets the leave the service go on to lead great, exemplary lives either. Do these vets want to do a complete background check on all that pass away and the family requests a military funeral?

He earned the honor. He put his butt on the line putting Marines on the beach as young man. What he did as a civillian was wrong, but it doesn’t negate his service to his country. Besides, was he ever convicted, or was he just under suspicion?

Ok I missed the part at the end where he was convicted and served 24 years in prison. Seems to me he paid his debt to society and was released. Give him his funeral.
