Obama Speech to Kids Sets Off Parent Furor

A groundswell of parent opposition to President Barack Obama's speech next week to students on the importance of education has forced many North Texas school districts to question whether to air it live in classrooms.

Obama announced the speech weeks ago, but opposition and concerns spread rapidly Wednesday morning through conservative social networking Web sites and radio talk shows.

By midday, local school districts say, they were inundated with hundreds of phone calls from parents urging them to not show Obama's speech at school.

Some parents threatened to keep their children home from school if the video was aired.

"We had no idea that there would be a public outcry," said Laura Jobe, a Mesquite ISD spokeswoman. "It caught us by surprise."

Cody Cunningham of the McKinney ISD said: "We rarely hear of parents pulling children out of history or government classes where they're studying the politics or historical significance of a previous president."

How timely! Tonight is "Curriculum Night" at my son's elementary school. We live in Valley Ranch, which hosted a 1200+ strong town hall two weeks ago.

If the school decides to show Obama's speech, then my son will have a doctor's appointment that day.

Call your elected school board member and complain, loudly.

The Childrens’ Story by James Clavell (author of Shogun and Nobel House). Mr. Clavell was very concerned about Big Brother brainwashing children.

I’m in the North Texas area and the school district that we are in has declined to show the speech. Got an email on it this morning. We are a rural, conservative area so I wasn’t surprised.

"We rarely hear of parents pulling children out of history or government classes where they're studying the politics or historical significance of a previous president."

How utterly clueless are these people? This isn't about history or the politics of a former President.

This is a sitting POTUS spewing political propaganda to children without consent from their parents and the state controlled schools are willing dupes.

It's completely innapropriate and unheard of.

If Obammy is so concerned with children's education he should put his useless wife and her staff of 27 handlers to work on a national PSA campaign.

I couldn’t come up with a more disingenuous response if I tried.

“Cody” must be the NEA Obama-worship team leader.

I "borrowed" the below letter that a Freeper had posted here yesterday, modified it a little, and sent it on the the superintendant of our school district. I also called and the secretary said they are overwhelmed with the volume of calls and requests to remove students on Tuesday. Dear Dr. , When it comes to teaching my child about personal responsibility and life goals, I have determined that I am a far better teacher of those objectives than a politician who has chosen to surround himself with known anarchists, communists, and terrorists. Therefore, and will be removed from school on September 8, 2009 during the time period in which President Obama will be invading their school and trampling on children's privacy. They are being removed in order in ensure they are not corrupted by the propaganda that will be shown in their classroom. President Obama has not asked my permission to speak to my child, who is a minor, and I have not seen any of the curriculum which is expected to be handed out and discussed during this time. Furthermore, has not asked my permission for my children to view Obama’s speech, asked my permission to hand out material which is not part of 's normal curriculum, or given parents the right to "opt-out" of this presentation. Please advise when Obama will be speaking and what other activities will be taking place around his speech so that I may pick up and before the socialist indoctrination of our children begins. I will return them to school when this invasion of our public schools has concluded. Respectfully Yours,

Well there you go...when Obama is considered a 'previous president', we'll consider studying his mistakes, his wrongheaded path towards socialism, his attempts to eradicate American capitalism, his degrading/dissolving the American military might/mission.

Perhaps the future history teaching of his Impeachment, his Senate trial, may be a lesson to all would be 'Oneders'. That would definitely be a "historical significance of a previous president".

OTOH...we do not need our children to be exposed to an outright political 'stunt' that attempts to sway the minds of young impressionable students. To form their thinking process for future manipulations, to plant a liberal 'seed' in every household.

“OTOH...we do not need our children to be exposed to an outright political ‘stunt’ that attempts to sway the minds of young impressionable students.”

Obama’s (first) speech will be harmless. He is counting on the brain-dead liberal teachers to do his dirty work for him. Thus the Dept. of Education issued “talking points”

Heads up to private religious schools, make sure you cover up any crosses, or images, that reflect your values, The President doesn’t like to address audiences where there are religious symbols, unless albeit it be of that glorious PEACEFUL religion......
