Governor Vetoes Bill On Unionizing of Farmworkers

September 2, 2009

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has again vetoed a Democratic-backed bid to change the way farmworker organizing elections have been run for three decades.

The governor said the measure, sponsored by the United Farm Workers and carried by state Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), is identical to bills he has vetoed in recent years.

The bill would have allowed the union to sign up workers away from the farm. Schwarzenegger said that would have stripped farmworkers of the privacy of the voting booth to decide whether they wanted the union to represent them.

Backers of the measure said the change would have allowed the UFW to conduct an election without workers' being intimidated by farm owners. Opponents said it would have given the union a big advantage in its bid to sign up workers.
