One thing you can do that will armor their brains against magical schemes from politicians is have them read Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson. All four of mine were required to read it twice, once in middle school and once in high school. Now whenever a utopian mentions a scheme to correct some freemarket flaw their brains automatically start going through the chain of secondary and tertiary consequences that must follow. It is better than inculcating conservative economic values, it teaches them to reason economically. They can't help themselves.

The book is short and not tedious to read. It should be a basic first textbook in any economics class and in every home. It is cheap at Amazon- under $7 for a used one.I once had a case of them which I gave away to nieces and nephews and the offspring of friends and to interested strangers. I still have a couple. Actually you can find the whole thing on line now.
