The White House is hiring a contractor to harvest information about Americans from its pages on social networking websites such as MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr.
The National Legal and Policy Center, or NLPC, revealed the White House New Media team is seeking to hire a technology vendor to collect data such as comments, tag lines, e-mail, audio and video from any place where the White House "maintains a presence" for a period of up to eight years.
"The contractor shall provide the necessary services to capture, store, extract to approved formats, and transfer content published by EOP (Executive Office of the President) on publicly-accessible web sites, along with information posted by non-EOP persons on publicly-accessible web sites where the EOP offices under PRA (Presidential Records Act) maintains a presence," the posting states.

Excerpt from White Hose New Media solicitation of bids
According to the 51-page solicitation of bids posted Aug. 21, the purpose of the mining and archiving project is to "comply with the Presidential Records Act," though the listing does not specify how the information will be used. It states that the government is currently collecting data from social networks both programmatically and by use of daily screenshots.

Oh,oh!
Friends laughed at me when I dumped the social networking garbage 5 years ago. Now who’s laughing?
Then again, if they’re doing this publicly with social networking sites, I’m sure they’re already doing it surreptitiously for sites like FR.
This only means comments etc posted on THEIR page on the site?
Should we hide from them? I don’t think so; I choose not to hide, but to stand up and face these evil ones.
With God by my side, whom shall I fear?
Collect this!! (use your imaginations)
Wonder if Facebook/myspace knew and it’s buried in the terms of use language that nobody ever reads?
Yes, we are indeed being hosed by this administration.
They can only take my life once. I choose to stand and fight (and be recognized as being on the right side of this fight). Come and get me Obamasiah!!!!!
Isn’t this illegal?
It isn’t buried. It is right out in the open in the terms of service.
The nationalization of social networking sites and the internet.
Is that what the new 50 lawyers they hired are for? Enforcing social justice on the internet?
I always assumed that Myspace and Facebook would be used for indoctrination.
Weird how dems from my past have been contacting me on Facebook.
I never started. I have always warned everyone that posting crap on those sites about themselves was a real dumb thing to do.
But it is a good place to look for info on potential employees.... Questions you aren't allowed to ask on job applications are easily answered by the fools own my space profile and comments.
Maybe they’ll take some of my comments to heart and seek professional help. /sarcasm
If you are on a public forum, it is not reasonable to expect any privacy. No one is holding a gun to your head to type and post personal information or your opinions on public forums.
I’d say it is an attempt to cool or control the information flow on the as yet uncontrolled internet. It is a threat to their rule. A certain percentage of citizens will pull back from potential harassment they could suffer by speaking out. Chilling the flow of ideas, the sharing of information.
Should our government be doing this? Hell no!
Not really. Once you post info on public domain, it can be seen and used by anyone. It's unethical for Obama to be compiling it to profile what he considers his enemies however, and perhaps what he's compiling may be illegal
