LONDON (MarketWatch) -- BP said Wednesday it achieved a "giant" discovery after drilling to one of the oil and gas industry's deepest-ever depths.
At the Tiber prospect in deepwater Gulf of Mexico, BP /quotes/comstock/13*!bp/quotes/nls/bp (BP 52.76, +2.29, +4.54%) /quotes/comstock/23s!a:bp. (UK:BP. 541.65, +22.15, +4.26%) said it drilled to a total depth of approximately 35,055 feet and found oil.
Transocean /quotes/comstock/13*!rig/quotes/nls/rig (RIG 74.49, -0.44, -0.59%) , which leased the rig to BP, said it was the deepest-ever well drilled in the Gulf.
The prospect is 250 miles southeast of Houston under 4,132 feet of water.

I wonder how much other oil is down there?

Quick, Obama, put a stop to this before somebody produces something!

Obama will probably try to stop the offshore drilling in order to save the planet and present “cleaner” alternatives.

The hateful commie, perennial losers at PoopPeace say its OK for the ChiComs to begin drilling immediately, but “greedy”, “exploitative” western oil companies need to develop more Gaia-friendly “alternatives”.

So how many windmills from GE can we place on that drilling site?

"Deeply buried sediment. Wow." Almost 7 miles deep. I doubt it's sediment, dinosaurs, or "billions of years" worth of micro organisms, which somehow don't decay within days after thy die and turn into oil until there's enough to decay into an oil field

Makes you wonder about the theory of the origins of oil .....
To: xcamel
Thanks...I did a search with the full title...maybe missed seeing the others...
To: Ernest_at_the_Beach
"Makes you wonder about the theory of the origins of oil ...." Only one of them. But don't worry, someone will come along and explain how 35 billion dinosaurs (or more depending on the size of this field) fell into a hole all at the same time seven miles under the crust. This must be pretty darn hot oil too. Amazing it's not gas. Unless temperature only increases to a certain depth then begins to decrease with depth... hmmmm.

Were it not sediment we would doubtless know it as the first time hydrocarbon deposits had ever been recovered from either igneous or metamorphic rock.
Please detail whatever evidence supports the latter hypothesis.
Thanks.

"Makes you wonder about the theory of the origins of oil ..... " I think that it is becoming abundantly clear that oil is being produced in the Earth's mantle on a continuous basis. More and more reports of dry wells replenishing themselves etc. This is bad news for the "We're about to run out of oil" alarmists.
