AUSTIN – At the end of his first term as president of the Texas Republic, Sam Houston had to leave office before seeking another term three years later. Under the republic’s constitution, the storied Texas hero was barred from serving two consecutive terms.
Nearly 170 years later, the on-again, off-again question of term limits for Texas chief executives is now emerging as an ingredient in the roiling Republican primary battle between incumbent Gov. Rick Perry and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.
In seeking to retire the state’s longest-serving governor, Hutchison wants to limit Texas governors to eight years in office, asserting that Perry would be in power far too long if he won an unprecedented third four-year term.
In response, the Perry camp is accusing Hutchison of being disingenuous, saying she backtracked on early pledges to seek term limits for members of Congress and broke a campaign promise by winning re-election to a third six-year term in 2006.
Consequently, political longevity and tenure are becoming widening themes in a race that has already divided the two senior office-holders on a host of other issues. Whenever Hutchison reminds voters that Perry would be in office for a total of 14 years if he wins re-election, Perry’s campaign points to Hutchison’s 16 years in the Senate to depict her as a classic Washington insider out of touch with Texas.

The mood among other candidates is mixed. Former U.S. Ambassador Tom Schieffer of Fort Worth, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor, opposes term limits while Houston-area Republican Debra Medina, running against Hutchison and Perry in the GOP primary, is a strong term-limit advocate.

Is there any rational argument for term limits from KBH other than “it’s my turn!?” This is a woman who has served 16 YEARS in the US Senate. Doesn’t seem like she supports term limits with her actions...

I’ve hoped for some time that the RINO battle between KBH and RP would cancel enough votes to allow a real conservative to win the GOP Primary. I’m not completely sold on her yet, but so far - I like what I see.
You are right, and I want nothing to do with KBH.
I did notice the mention of Medina who is also running for Governor.
Watched a video of part of the 10th Amendment gathering on the capital steps in Austin on Saturday. That was the first time I had ever heard of her. She is a fire in the belly speaker, but I think the event (or at least a part of it) was a little mis-billed. Being “unknown” is not necessarily a bad thing, but the caution flags popped up when I watched her speech.
I think the reason that Rick Perry did not attend was that he found out who was organizing it, and felt it was an attempt to ambush him.
The Ft. Worth paper mentioned her, while she is not yet considered a serious contender. I still do not know anything about her. But I am skeptical of those who boldly advocate Secession as a solution (yet).
I don't trust Perry to do the right thing but I KNOW that KBH won't do the right thing.
I’m taking a serious look at her. Search for the keyword “medina” here on FR to find some article about her.
Yeah, I just don’t trust her. She’s been wheeling and dealing in D.C. for too long.
