The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 43% would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate while 36% would opt for his or her Democratic opponent.

That represents the lowest level of support for Democrats in recent years, while Republicans have tied their highest level of support for the third straight week. The previous low for Democrats over the past year was 37%.

This summer, support for Republican candidates ranged from 41% to 43%, support for Democrats ranged from 37% to 39%. Looking back one year ago, support was strikingly different for the parties. Throughout the summer of 2008, support for Democratic congressional candidates ranged from 45% to 48%. Republican support ranged from 34% to 37%.

This is now the tenth straight week GOP candidates have held the advantage. However, Scott Rasmussen, president of Rasmussen Reports, notes that it’s too early for Republicans to be celebrating. “These numbers certainly represent weakness for the Democrats, but it’s important to remember that the mid-term elections are 14 months away. That’s plenty of time for the President’s party to do some damage control and pick up the pieces from what has been a tough month of August.”

For Republicans dreaming of another 1994-type election, Rasmussen adds that “Democrats in 2010 will have one advantage they couldn’t count on in 1994. During the Clinton years, nobody could remember a time when the GOP controlled Congress.”

Democrats held a six- or seven-point lead on the ballot for the first few weeks of 2009. That began to slip in early February, and from mid-April through June the two parties were roughly even.

Prior to the week of March 15, however, Democratic candidates held the advantage in on the Generic Ballot for several years.

well lets hope that this trend continues
my fear is that Obama’s unpopularity has peaked and starts to pick up again
of course i hope the downward spiral continues well into the 30s and hopefully 20s by 2010 :)

While this may be hopeful...I’m not sure I trust the GOP anymore. Too many friggin’ RINOs that need to be culled out of the herd.

I’d happily see Pelosi get run out of town on a big fat rail. That monstrosity, Nine percent Nan really does need putting out to pasture.

Does this factor in Democrat shameless cheating, which has to be considered a part of every election now?

Too bad the election is not this year. Though even Charlie Cook says he sees a “wave” coming that could hit in 2010. If the economy improves though, so will Demo chances. Even if our rights are being taken away, I fear too many people just won’t care.

Given the strong Left bias in many urban areas, this should bode well for Right candidates in all of the CD’s that McCain carried but have a Left congressman.

Yes, there are too many damned RINOS, but we MUST go out and vote for them if the choice on the other side is a Liberal Dem.
Staying at home put a man in the White House who seeks counsel from terrorists, communists, and black radicals (this is not hyperbole, these people are self-identified as such).

I hope you are right. Perhaps even if the economy is doing better, it will only lead to apathy among some Dems, so they won’t show up. But if the conservative base remains motivated, and independents remain negative on B0, the Dems might still see some significant losses.

One year too early. Lets hope that it looks like this a year from now. We all know how political prospects can change from day to day.

That's great and all, but what good will it do to elect the same old RINOs time and again. Conservatives need to take back the party leadership so they can better support conservative candidates financially in the primaries. Conservatives also need to make their own campaign contributions to those candidates as well as do volunteer work for their campaigns. Voting is enough.

This cycle of jumping from the frying pan into the fire and back into the frying pan has got to stop now, or it never will.

Edit: Should have been, “Voting isn’t enough”.
