Shamed Governor Battles to Save Job

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, stung by political attacks over his extramarital affair with an Argentine woman, said in his first extended interview since June that he no longer wants to "crawl into a cave" and will fight to keep his job in the face of mounting public opposition.

"I have a newfound level of humility, knowing how hard I work and how hard I push is not the ultimate driver of change," he said in the interview Monday. "Power resides with people."

Mr. Sanford, whose once-high approval numbers have deteriorated, also acknowledged that his opponents "smell blood in the water." But he insisted he won't be forced to resign.

If he were a D this would have been a 1-day story. A 2-day story if he had drowned her.

I agree about the double standard but he is a joke now.

He could have been President. He walked the walk of a conservative but he humilitaed his wife and children for a woman that is not even that attractive. She is flat as a board and looks a bit like a guy. I would have thought Graham-nesty would have been on it.

SC has a good guy in DeMint. Sanford could have been somebody - now he is a clown.

I agree. He needs to go. Any man who destroys his family like he did isn’t fit to hold office.

Very sad. Dems can be total vermin but conservative Republicans cannot respect this man any longer. He betrayed his family for that. Then he writes stupid poetry, He is a fool.

A lot of conservatives had great hopes for him as well. Humans makes mistake but no one will respect this man. He should step aside.

SC has good ones like DeMint and jerks like Sanford and Graham-nesty need to be shown the door along with AZ’s Juan McCain.

The affair was bad enough; the marriage and soul destroyer to me were his statements that he "found his soul mate" and "I am trying to fall in(or back in) love with my wife."

As a woman, I would have found these words so callous and hurtful and the dirty laundry he hung out for public consumption as he whined so obnoxious, I doubt I could have looked at him or spoken to him for months.

He could have been President...Sanford could have been somebody - now he is a clown.

Sanford is not and was not all that smart, and I spent quite a bit of time here warning people of that. The smoking gun was his wholesale swallowing of the global warming religion. It's just as well that everyone figured that out now.

What I find hard to understand is the need politicians seem to have - from Sanford to Teddy Kennedy - to stay in public life after a major disgrace like this. They really ought to withdraw from public life and live their lives in obscurity, at least for awhile. Maybe it's just something in the makeup of the politician personality.

They seem to have no shame.

My sympathies to his wife and kids.

That picture is so sad! Look at that poor lady. “Darn, Bill. I just wanted to eat my lunch special and now this idiot behind me won’t shut up.”

Sanford looks like the moron that he is. I’ve never seen a bigger display of stupidity than his rants after the affair.

Yeah it was just sickening and incredibly ego centric. It’s all about ME - just like Clinton, Obama and most of the other politicians.

He should have just apologized, begged his wife for forgiveness or tell her he would not contest a divorce if that was what she wanted. Then quietly resign. Instead he made himself a bigger fool and hurt his wife and family even more.

I would think the bimbo in Argentina would have a lot less respect for him as well. He needs to go away. It would be nice if he took Graham-nesty, McCain and Charlie Crist with him.

In this day and age, you can chase all the kitty you want, but if you get caught, you are toast. Unless your name is Barney Frank and you run a gay prostie ring out of your apartment. But Sanford is crispier than a Krakatoa farmer, so buh-bye.

I give his wife credit for walking out on him as opposed to Dem laywer wives - Edwards and Spitzer.

They are “stand by their (slimy) man” women.

Spitzer’s wife is pretty but my guess is all his money is his old man’s and she would get nothing in a divorce.

In other words, he would like to thwart the will of The People.

This guy is crazy as a loon. I guess they’ll have to drag his sorry butt out of office. It seems as though half of these politicians are nuts.
