Checked Wikipedia and found out that he is the first Imam in the military...He may have gone from Army to Navy and the Navy appointed him to the Marines with the rank of Lt. Commander..The Wiki article gives a citation to an arabic site about the Army so that is in question but the rest of the article seems clearer that he tried to join the Marines but then he joined the Navy and was assigned to the Marines.
He is a Bangladeshi by birth but has now become an American citizen..
