LAS VEGAS -- In Room 519 of Kindred Hospital, Linda Rivera can no longer speak.
Her mute state, punctuated only by groans, is the latest downturn in the swift collapse of her health that began in May when she curled up on her living room couch and nonchalantly ate several spoonfuls of the Nestlé cookie dough her family had been consuming for years. Federal health officials believe she is among 80 people in 31 states sickened by cookie dough contaminated with a deadly bacteria, E. coli O157:H7.
The impact of the infection has been especially severe for Rivera and nine other victims who developed a life-threatening complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. One, a 4-year-old girl from South Carolina, had a stroke and is partially paralyzed.

It does say on the package to cook it, right??
A “lawyer’s” American Dream.
Can you say frivolous law suit?
I can. Yes, I’ll get flamed for ‘not having any sympathy’ but I can assure you that I honestly hope this woman feels better soon.
Regardless... I have a problem with ANY company selling FOOD that is contaminated.
WTH!!!!
The article goes on...
The E. coli victims are among millions -- one in four Americans -- sickened by food-borne illnesses each year. As waves of recalls have caused the public to lose confidence in the safety of food, lawmakers are scrambling to respond. In July, the House approved legislation that would give the Food and Drug Administration broad new powers and place new responsibilities on food producers. The bill would speed up the ability of health officials to track down the source of an outbreak and give the government the power to mandate a recall, rather than rely on food producers to voluntarily pull tainted products from the shelves. The Senate is expected to take up its version in the fall, and the issue has become a high priority for the White House.
It is impossible to say whether new laws and tougher enforcement would have prevented the contamination of the Nestlé cookie dough, which the company voluntarily pulled from stores hours after the government linked it to the outbreak.
Seems like the government will cease this as another crisis to grow government.
Thoughts? Comments?
and by “cease” I mean “seize.” (It’s been a long day. :) )
Is raw pig meat “contaminated” if you get sick from it?
I don’t know, but I am guilty of doing the same. I got torqued by the skimpy amount of chocolate chip cookie dough in the ice cream by the same name so I added extra dough from a Pillsbury tube. Fortunately, I didn’t get sick, but I have since stopped that practice.
Cookie dough is not equal to raw pig meat.
Wow, next time I want to take a bite of raw cookie dough I’ll have to pass. Kidney failure, gallbladder problems, etc, etc. this woman’s system has really been compromised. It reminds me of my mom’s deteriorating health after she took celebrex.
My slow webtv would not go to link darnit.
Thanks for posting.
Can you post (if you feel like it) a direct link I can click on.
How horrible for this woman and others.
Do they know how a strain of ecoli got into the product?
As would Chet.... how dare she take a bite of raw cookie dough!
Must have been pitbull flavored, huh?
LOL! Arf!
I grew up in a time when it was common knowledge that food products had to be prepared properly before being eaten. Products such as pork, or anything with raw eggs (cake and cookie batters) are a couple of examples where it was understood that there was a definite risk of illness if eaten uncooked or undercooked. I think people today no longer understand that an important purpose, if not the major purpose of cooking is to prepare foods to make them safe to eat.
They don’t appear to know how. They have started up again with fresh everything.
Eating dough of any kind is a common practice at our house. I wouldn’t compare it to eating raw meat, as some earlier posters have done. I think almost everybody who bakes eats raw dough of some form or another.
