Our best guess about global warming may be wrong
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 8/31/2009 | Moises Velasquez-Manoff

Fifty-five million years ago, the world was a much warmer place. The poles were ice-free year-round. Palm trees grew in Alaska. Forests stretched right into the Arctic Circle.

There, swamps like those in today’s southeastern United States hosted alligators, snakes, and giant tortoises.

Scientists call this time in Earth’s history the Eocene, the dawn of the age of mammals. And climatologists have naturally taken a keen interest in how it began.

They know that a dramatic spike in carbon dioxide associated with rapid climate change kicked off the epoch – called the “Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum” (PETM). But what scientists don’t understand about the PETM may hold the most relevant lessons for where the world’s climate is headed today.

So far, scientists have been unable to reproduce the PETM in a climate model. In order to get the climate they suspect existed, they have to crank up carbon dioxide far beyond what they think was actually the case.

M.I.T. scientists have stated that all of the “popular climate models” have been distorted by about 6 times.

In other words, it’s all bull$hit.

Yeah, I didn’t bother with a sarcasm tag. We know it will NEVER happen.

They can’t duplicate it because they put the horse before the cart. They are trying to force global warming by increasing CO2 when in fact the relationship is exactly opposite. An increase in temperature releases vast amounts of CO2 from the oceans (75% of the earth’s surface). Their reversal of the natural cause and effect relationship has them completely baffled.

Whether it's BS or not I'm going to check the net to see if the Sun has any spots.

Shows a couple of little spots ~ which may or may not be deserving of a number. Sometimes these things start to form and then disappear before they cross the face of the Sun. Those don't count. This would end the period without a Sunspot at 51 days, FOURTH LONGEST in the last 150 years.

My money is on this sucker evaporating.

This coming winter will be nasty. I bet it will wipe out any “increase” we’ve had in temps.

It's a trailing indicator, not a leading one. Duh.

The good thing about The Long Emergency is that thinking which is this garbled ends up in death for the thinker, thus making life easier for the rest of us.

We all wish it got a little warmer. It doesn't though.

Wait a minute Jerry Dickens of Rice University, and James Zachos of UC Santa Cruz; is not another possibility, like one of the comments cites, that CO2 has virtually nothing to do with initializing or exacerbating the warming, but rather is a product of that warming, and that product is not linearly accumulated with warming, but rather is quite complex in its response, and that the models do not come close to assessing this response?

Are we missing a possibility here? After all the CO2 forcing factor is an actively inserted value in the models obliterating the possible negative feedback pathways which might account for the nonlinear CO2 (product) variation.

Perhaps you should look at this like Obamacare - go back and reconsider the whole thing.

The Christian Science Monitor, which was once arguably the nation's most excellent newspaper, but which since has imploded to the usual lowest common leftist denominator, wouldn't serve this up if it were not on the desk of editors all around the mediasphere. I take it as a harbinger of a return to rationality, even if the turn is years away.

I estimate there are a good dozen “possible” possible feedback theories, but none have been established, and half have been disproved. It defies logic that the tiny contribution of mankind, to a trace atmospheric gas, can even with a feedback loop, leverage far greater climate forces, but this is what is being asserted as fact. But no other theory, such as a massive release of methane, can be used to politically and economically control and dominate people. Rationally addressing the issue, I therefore have to demand two things that the advocates of the AGW theory refuse to provide.

First, give me a negative case for AGW. State some condition, *any* condition, in which AGW is *not* happening. Second, permit other solutions to the potential problem than the discontinuation of industrialism, and the massive shift of money and political power to the undeserving who promise that by doing so, all problems will be solved. That is, credibility is lost when the same people who posit a problem insist that there is only one solution to that problem, which benefits them personally.
