You are right that Carter was not only incompetent, but inimical to American interests.
However, during his tenure, I only thought he was incompetent. It was unbelievable and unthinkable for many Americans at the time that a President could be linked with the enemy.
Some people now believe that people in Carter’s administration tipped off the Russians about the helicopters in the desert rescue plan for our hostages in Iran, and that the helicopters didn’t run into each other by accident, but were fired upon by Russian planes and it was all covered up.
