A FIRE has broken out onboard a Navy ship at Sydney's Garden Island with a pack of emergency vehicles rushed to the scene.
NSW Fire Brigades say two electrical boxes caught fire on the hanger deck of ship berthed at the Navy base about 8.10pm (AEST) today.
Due to the nature of the emergency, "a number" of fire trucks rushed to Garden Island, a fire brigades spokesman said.

I hope it’s not near the power room, and it isn’t fully loaded. Otherwize I’d be rushing the other way....

I helped fight a shipboard fire, and they can be brutal. One would think all of that steel would slow the spread of fire, but it actually transfers heat extremely fast from one compartment to another, causing combustables in the next room to self cobust. What’s worse is the steel also prevents ventalation of the deadly smoke. This is why every sailor is trained in fire fighting.
This ship was lucky to be pier side.
Most of the current fleet is Australian built, often of modified US or European designs.
You don’t have to go back that far.
