BAINBRIDGE, Ind. -- Republican Mitch Daniels has repeatedly insisted that his 2008 run for a second term as Indiana's governor was his last election and that he's not interested in the "savagery" of a national campaign.
But like it or not, Daniels' name is being dropped in conservative GOP circles as someone to watch in 2012. Many say Daniels is just what the battered GOP needs, a blend of conservative values, cool demeanor and fiscal discipline.
"Mitch has been steady to the cause, he's stayed principled," said Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee. "The nation is going to recognize him."
Some political observers said Daniels is as good a bet as any for a national party reeling from Democrats' solid victory last year and the recent stumbles of former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and two other rising GOP stars -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and Nevada Sen. John Ensign.

You are right. We could do a lot worse than Mitch.
Wasn’t he called a RINO for some reason(s)?
She would be a great VP pick for Mitch.
I could get behind this guy, from what I have been told about him privately.
She’s my pick!
I have yet to find a single politician here who someone hasn’t called a RINO at one time or another. I have met the man, heard him talk and I trust him to do what’s right.
Take a look at what he’s done for Indiana, we are in far better shape now than when he took over, I shudder to think what kind of shape our state would be in now if the (D) running against him had won.
Yes, she would, but you see if Sarah declares her intentions to seek the GOP nomination in '12 the primaries will be but a formality, with Sarah sweeping all of them.
"Mitch" is free to run though, he would gain invaluable lessons as the grand lady of Alaska bests him and all other challengers.
Anyone who isn’t 100% is a RINO.. I head he has done some good things...
Mitch Daniels has been a good governor, IMO, however he couldn’t get elected on the national level. Not nearly charismatic enough.
Me too I will crawl over broken glass to vote for Sarah!!
“Wasnt he called a RINO for some reason(s)?”
No.
The Associalistic Press need to have a look at the current poll numbers,
The Democrats are tethering on the verge of collapse everywhere, and 0bama’s poll numbers are in a free fall.
This is not November 2008, This is September 2009.
The AP needs to get with the program.
” and the recent stumbles of former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin”
“Recent stumbles?"
I see. Like how she managed to take down 0bama in the detahcare issue, and has had 0bama reeling on every single issue that she has struck on?
Seems to me Sarah Palin is hitting her stride, is in full flow, and is enjoying herself very much, thank you.
We get the same news here in Baghdad the rest of you folks get, but I must have missed something...
Don’t know much about him but some interesting stuff from wiki:
-arrested for possession of marijuana and spent two nights in jail
-increased taxes on cigarettes to pay for healthcare for uninsured.
-a first generation Syrian American and supporter of the Arab-American Institute, having been honored by them for his work in the community. James Zogby, brother of pollster John Zogby, is founder and president of the AAI.
AAI accepts significant financial support from the Governments of Libya, Qatar, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, among other Arab countries. In November 2008, the Arab American Institute sent a letter to Democratic Senate majority leader Harry Reid, as part of a failed attempt to block the reappointment of Senator Joe Lieberman to the chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The letter cited in particular a report on Islamist extremism and the “Homegrown Terrorist Threat” completed by the committee in May 2008, which Senator Joe Lieberman chaired.
...”Not nearly charismatic enough.”
After 4 years of “too cool” I think the American voters are going to be yearning for honest, straightforward, hard working, sincere mid-western values. Mitch Daniels and John Hoeven (Repub Governor of North Dakota) should both run for the Repub nod, either would be a great candidate.
“-a first generation Syrian American”
His mother is Syrian, so what. Daniels is a great governor and a true conservative, he’d make an outstanding president.
Sarah....Sarah....Sarah.
I wonder how that sell-off of the Indiana Turnpike is doing. Last I heard, that private (and unregulated) company was sending tolls THROUGH THE ROOF.
Looks like Mitch certainly has his problems.
