The standard of care in some hospital wards and nursing homes “would shame a third world country”, nurses have warned
Their comments follow a damning report which estimated that one million patients had suffered appalling care, including neglect and cruelty, at the hands of NHS staff, many of them nurses.
Hundreds more people have come forward with their tales of appalling treatment since the report, by the Patients Association, was published on Thursday.
Nursing leaders have defended the profession, insisting that while poor care can never be excused only a small minority of staff were involved and that part of the blame lay with heavy workloads and staff shortages.
But nurses have admitted that in some cases patients are suffering appalling treatment on wards.
Maureen Hamilton, who has been a nurse for more than 40 years, said that the standards of care “would shame a third world country”, particularly on wards looking after the elderly.

Given the hellhole the NHS seems to be, are there any actual volunteers from outside that system who try to make the places a bit nicer, like mopping floors and such? Or would that just draw the wrath of the official unionized floor moppers?

“Shame a Third World country” Ha! Britain has loaded the NIS with doctors and nurses from all over the Third World, stripping their native countries of medical personnel, and infusing Third World standards of training and care into the hospitals and clinics of the U.K.
Rush had a caller last week that said he worked as a resp. therapist for 46 yrs. The caller said many elderly patients are kept alive on ICU by machines when there is no hope for recovery. His implication was that the hospital should withold care and let the patients die because the families were unwilling to make that decision.
This is the problem with Obamacare. After 46 yrs on the job this guy has forgotten that it is not his decision. He seems to have forgotten that his patients are human beings and not just the guy in 406B. He has become desensitized.
I worked in a hospital for over 40 yrs and I have seen it happen with nurses and Drs. especially when they are short staffed. They used to call it “burnout”. Now it will just be Obamacare.
