Former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff is poised to mount a Democratic primary campaign against U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet.
Urged to challenge Gov. Bill Ritter as he seeks re-election in 2010, Romanoff has instead turned his attention to next year's Senate race, sources close to Romanoff told The Denver Post. One source reported that Romanoff offered a campaign position to a veteran Democratic strategist.
Romanoff could not be reached for comment Friday night, but several people close to him said they expect him to announce next month.
Wally Stealey, a longtime lobbyist and political mover in Pueblo, said Romanoff called him Friday morning to tell him he had decided to run.

With a skilled, well-financed candidate, the GOP can. Hopefully, whoever wins the DemocRAT Primary will be too damaged to win the general election.
for those outside Colorado,can you tel us just how it will be big? I like to know who to root for.
Romanoff and Bennet are both Democrats. The Republican field is still forming.
well i hope they tear one another apart but that strategy did not work too well in the 2008 presidential election.

In what way? Colorado is far more libertarian than anything else. Plus, we only have 1 beach in the whole state.
I was thinking along the same lines. He'd be perfect for the Obama administration!

It will result in a vigorous Democrat primary which could leave the nominee in bad shape in the general election.
If Colorado is so full of Libertarians why don’t they elect one?
With a name like Romanoff, it’s appropriate that he’s a Democrat.
I hope Bennett will be forced to spend to his personal fortune.
Colorado voted against McCain/Bush. There were places like Boulder that voted for Obama but most of Colorado is nothing like that. However, when presented with a POS like McCain as a nominee and coming off of Bush, it could have been expected.
Keep in mind that El Paso County, where I am located, voted for McCain by something like 67%. You can’t toss all of Colorado into a bucket and call it the same: it isn’t.
Our governor, Ritter, is about as unpopular as they come. His days are numbered. Watch Colorado go red on the next go around.
