'JUSTICE Secretary Kenny MacAskill freed Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al- Megrahi over fears Scotland would suffer a terrorist backlash if he died behind bars.
He believed Megrahi would have been seen as a MARTYR by Islamic extremists if he had been left to die in Greenock Prison.
And last night a source close to the Cabinet Secretary said: "Kenny feared the repercussions would have haunted Scotland for a generation and more.
"If Megrahi had died in a Scottish jail, we'd have seen burning Saltires across the Middle East."
MacAskill and SNP First Minister Alex Salmond are preparing to publish secret papers relating to the decision to send Megrahi - suffering from terminal prostate cancer - home to Libya on compassionate grounds.
They have pledged to release a raft of documents, including letters to the Foreign Office, and have urged the UK Government to do the same, in advance of a debate at Holyrood on Wednesday.'

If I had been asked, I would have voted to give him a tent, a camel and a camping site on the windward side of Unst, the northernmost Shetland Island. He would have had a month to prepare for the fall storms and then winter. The vision just sends a tingle down my leg.
They wouldn’t have had this mess if they had offed him in the first place...SSZ
The Spartan authorities had evidence that Pausanias the regent (the victor at the battle of Plataea against the Persians in 479 B.C.) was guilty of treason (medism) and were about to arrest him when he took refuge in the temple of Athena of the Brazen House. The Spartan ephors did not want to violate the sanctuary of the temple so they walled up the doors until he starved. When he was on the point of death, they removed him from the temple so that he wouldn't die in the temple and cause pollution.
The Scottish authorities could have waited until the Libyan terrorist had 24 hours or less to live and removed him to a hospice (in Scotland)--that way he wouldn't have died in prison, but he wouldn't have had a hero's welcome in Libya.
I'm waiting for the announcement that his cancer has miraculously gone into remission.
‘’’is “egg on face” a term used around the world??
Right. They are looking for a spin they hope will deflect the outrage ("we were just trying to protect the Scottish people from a terrorist attack"). Uh-huh.
So why imprison any terrorists then, if such actions might be "provocative"? Why bring them to justice at all?
B.S. Spin to cover up the Libyan oil smell of the whole business deal.
