My Name is Roger, and I'm an alcoholic
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | Roger Ebert

Posted on 08/28/2009 1:31:53 PM PDT by RKV

In August 1979, I took my last drink. It was about four o'clock on a Saturday afternoon, the hot sun streaming through the windows of my little carriage house on Dickens. I put a glass of scotch and soda down on the living room table, went to bed, and pulled the blankets over my head. I couldn't take it any more.

On Monday I went to visit wise old Dr. Jakob Schlichter. I had been seeing him for a year, telling him I thought I might be drinking too much. He agreed, and advised me to go to "A.A.A," which is what he called it. Sounded like a place where they taught you to drink and drive. I said I didn't need to go to any meetings. I would stop drinking on my own. He told me to go ahead and try, and check back with him every month.

The problem with using will power, for me, was that it lasted only until my will persuaded me I could take another drink. ...

A.A. believes there is an enormous difference between bring dry and being sober. It is not enough to simply abstain. You need to heal and repair the damage to yourself and others. We talk about "white-knuckle sobriety," which might mean, "I'm sober as long as I hold onto the arms of this chair." People who are dry but not sober are on a "dry drunk."

**Well, you should see how hostile people are to Christians in there.**

Look where they have to live the other 23 hours.. A world that Jesus has been marked to a 4 letter word, and Separation of church and state has become religious dogma for the LEFT, including the MEDIA.

It’s a sad state of affairs when one can be momentarily SHOCKED to actually hear the name of JESUS or... even GOD.
And I was Raised as a Christian.

George W. Bush is a Great Man and was a Great President

Okay, but not "great". Not in any sense of the word.

If you doubt what I’m saying, take a look at the mess that’s in there now.

Comparing cow dung to dog dung...

BTW, the mess we had under/with Bush is what led us to the mess we have now.

But I DO know how alcohol can destroy lives and if AA helps people stay sober then it is a good thing.

I feel guilty about not sponsoring, I admit that.

Don't. I have tried it and it's just not for me. I admit it. I make a crumby sponsor. Maybe someday - but not for now.

Actually I think it's because I had a young (in AA) sponsor at the beginning and then had a horrible experience trying to pick a new one after the first one moved away. It was some old guy that turned out to be trying to 13th step me. He, and a bunch of his acolytes, were "woman haters" and, I think, a clique of gays.

Exactly. The tower of America is leaning to the left and most of the GOP is running to that side to see the crash.

There is 1000+ different ways of carrying the message other than sponsoring. When I came in to the rooms.. we didn’t pick our sponsors... They PICKED US!!.

"The 1/2 measures room!"

I like that. It is quite pithy.

Well, you should see how hostile people are to Christians in there. Look, there are some sick, sick people at AA meetings. I’ve never met one that wasn’t horribly, deeply damaged. I’ve thought some of them weren’t - sponsors, ones with significant sobriety, but when I got to know them they were some scr-ew-ed up people.

Sadly, I'd bet that the percentages are not any different than the "normal" population.

Let's just say it's a screwed up world!

In Ebert's case I'll make an exception, mainly because the man has no class, even after being off booze for years.

Hearing that from you, I expect that you have an opinion on all the people you meet in life.

Get over yourself. You are insecure and judgmental.

In other words, you are meaningless in sincere discussions.

I’ve heard the drunk say he’s damn glad to be the drunk and not have to go to those “other meetings” because those women are CRAZY!

Yeah, but who drove them crazy? ; - )

You don’t know me at all. So any judgements on your part are limited at best, and worthless to a large degree. I judge this SOB as he judged Ashcroft and Bush. And I know a couple of dry drunks for comparison. Meanwhile what you think means zip to me. Nada. I posted this article and if you don’t like it or the thread just go away.
