House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has launched an urgent effort to raise $100,000 by Monday to help combat what she calls GOP "smears" about health care reform.
"Republican opponents of reform are coming out with one outrageous smear after the next, all aimed at derailing our progress. We must be able to counter their special interest-funded attacks and set the record straight," Pelosi wrote in a letter to Democratic supporters.
"That's why I have set a goal of raising $100,000 in grassroots donations before the August FEC fundraising deadline," says Pelosi.
Pelosi and Democrats are clearly worried that they've lost momentum on health care reform this month, and many in her caucus have been crushed by opposition at town hall events.
Pelosi's appeal is aimed at small donors, and she asks for donations of $5 or more in her letter.
Democrats for weeks have been on the defensive, accusing Republicans of mischaracterizing their reform effort. President Barack Obama fired back several weeks ago after Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), a key Republican negotiator on the Senate Finance Committee, said the Democratic push threatened to "pull the plug on grandma."
Now, Pelosi is pushing back.
"Republicans are doing everything they can to spread the lies they hope will kill health insurance reform," Pelosi writes at the end of the e-mail. "Please make a generous financial contribution to help Democrats get the truth out and fight GOP smears."

As I noted yesterday, the CIA IG’s report flatly refutes the claim made by Nancy Pelosi that the CIA never informed her in the fall of 2002 that terror suspects were being waterboarded. In other words, Nancy Pelosi knew that CIA interrogators were using Enhance Interrogation Techniques (”EITs”).
These same CIA interrogators are now being investigated for conduct that Nancy Pelosi was well aware of, yet never protested. These interrogators face possible criminal prosecution and financial ruin for conduct — taken less than a year after 3,000 Americans had been slaughtered due to the efforts of some of the very terrorists being interrogated — that had been rigorously vetted and approved by counsel and that had the tacit approval of Nancy Pelosi and the other members of the congressional oversight committees.
Now the Speaker of the House skips away from responsibility by smearing the CIA as liars. And the media can’t bestir themselves to confront the Speaker with basic questions about the bewildering inconsistencies in her story.
It’s not overstating the case to say that this is an abomination on a host of levels. Where are the media’s guardians of truth and protectors of the little guy now that there’s evidence that the American people have been lied to on a matter of national security and low-level CIA employees are being made the scapegoats?

How many free hours of Prime Time network time do the Democrats need to push this health care crap down our throats. I am thinking Obama has already gotten at least $100 million in free prime time air across all the networks and cable channels. What the heck is $100K going to do?

She is asking for $100,000? The woman has a net worth of around $50,000,000. She is asking for 0.2% of her net worth. If you make $60,000 a year, that is like asking for $120. Why doesn't this woman put up her own money? It's an extremely small part of her vast fortune. Oh, I almost forgot. She is a Democrat. Even when extremely rich she wants other people to pay for her pet projects. She is extremely greedy and selfish.

Smears? Like the costs are stupidly high, such as this request for $100,000 to generate propaganda for the program??? Those kind of smears?
I’m asking for $100,000 to pay some bills and remodel the house. That’s certainly more important than some lousy smears.
