I agree with you in today's society. The punishers would just as likely do it for their own sick pleasure as to discipline the kid.

During my time in L.A.USD in the 60s and 70s I was given swats for certain transgressions. Once I was swatted I never did the same thing again. And my father often followed up with another one for me at home.

It didn't hurt me, and I got thwacked by the grade school principal, and the junior high gym teacher.

You'da had a good time "taking apart" the gym teacher. He was a little guy, about 5' 8". But he could bench press 235 and had been a drill sergeant in the Marines.

There was no "abuse" involved, just a sobering change in my perspective.
