Constituents of Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann have two chances this week to discuss pressing issues with her, including a public forum on health care.

The 6th District Republican will be in St. Cloud today to tackle questions about Social Security. The seminar is geared toward women and Bachmann says she'll be joined by an official from the Social Security Administration.

On Thursday, Bachmann heads to Lake Elmo for the health care forum. She'll be accompanied by Congressman Michael Burgess, a fellow Republican from Texas who has a background in medicine.

"Michele Bachmann Town Hall (Health Care Organizing Event) It is so important for us to have a good showing at this event. The event will discuss health care. Bachmann is bringing Congressman Burgess from Texas. Burgess is a Republican and has been a doctor for over 21 years. Please be there at 1pm at the northeast corner of the parking lot. The doors open at 1:30, and we are hoping to fill in the front rows. Also please wear Obama, Franken etc. attire. Please have a question already formulated in case you get called on."

Unfortunately the St. Cloud event was only about SS issues and how to calculate your benefits. I stayed for about 45 minutes, but Michele was not there. Maybe she showed up later. I was disappointed that we could not address the Obama health care plan.

Oh well, Michele is on our side, but it would have been nice to see her anyway.

I have just talked with Sen. Franken’s office which informed me that the press release about the meetings was misunderstood by the media. The roundtable meetings are closed to the public. Franken will be meeting this afternoon with a select group of people from the health care industry.

When asked about town hall meetings for the rest of the public, I was told that Sen. Franken will be meeting people at the State Fair, that the State Fair starts tomorrow and that his office decided that was “a more efficient way” to meet people. He will not be holding any town hall meetings.

So again, the 3:00 p.m. Franken roundtable is CLOSED to the public.

Consider letting him know at the State Fair (if you go) or by letter how you feel about him not taking the opportunity to bring the issue before his constituents around the state like other members of Congress are doing outside MN (3,000 people came to U.S. Rep Jim Moran’s TH yesterday in VA).

The attendance at the 2008 MN State Fair was 1.7 million, many of whom are duplicates because some people come more than once. The population of Minnesota is over 5 million. Lots of people are not going to see Franken when they’re at the fair. He more likely will not even be in the booth when they go by.
